I would have opted for a self-loader, (semi-auto) myself. In high-stress situations its all too easy to “short-stroke” a pump gun, leaving you with an empty cylinder or worse, a jam. Cops do it all the time. Add to that the increased recoil of the pump.
Better to have the “machine do it”, (the reload), IMO. And the sound of racking that auto is equally intimidating. But since you’ve got the pump.....Practice, practice, practice ought to be your mantra. Both with dummy and real loads in practical simulations. Best would be a visit to GunSite - its fun !! - or some other school where the practical, legal and mental aspects of self-defense in a home environment are taught. >PS
Good. Now, learn to employ it fearlessly and effectively.
I have the 590A1 which is the tactical version of the 500. Parkerized, ghost ring sights, holds 9 in the gun and 4 in the stock.
The slide is kinda rough but works well enough. My 13 yr old handles it fine at the range. I had someone at the range tell me to install the pistol grips. I might do a folding stock but not a pistol grip.
>>Load with 2 #4, then 4 00buck, followed by 2 slugs.
That way you can blast em up close, then further out and a couple of rounds that will go thru the car they are driving.<<
That will put you in jail. When the threat ceases you MUST stop shooting or you can be charged.
You can always get “low-brass” shells for .12 ga.
A good recommendation on the Spec-ops, get the comb as well. The breachers grip replaces the pistol grip that came with it. One-handed slug shooting, made simple and painless.
I'd definitely use low recoil rounds with this but it would be a deadly at the intended close range. Nice thing about it is that it's considered an AOW (Any Other Weapon) by the BATFE and only requires a $5 stamp versus the $200 stamp for automatic weapons.
Plus back up for each one for when they are being serviced. Nothing like a nice 12 guage to inspire thugs to become compliant and if the inspiration doesn't kick in, the next phase is very convincing.
A nice workmanlike gun you got there. Good purchase!
I think you made a good choice. You could easily spend more and have only slightly more gun.
I have a 500, it has probably seen 25 cases of ammo over the years, still a blast to shoot plastic jugs with.
Yeah, I never mounted the pistol grip on mine, I am much more comfortable with pulling it into my shoulder and letting the pellets fly. The slide handle broke after a couple of years, sent it back and they fixed it for nothing. For the price, you can’t go wrong. Congrats, shoot and smile.
Where and how much, if you don’t mind?
My Mossberg Marverick 88 with an old AimPoint RedDot sight
I completely disagree unless it is a Mossberg issue or deficiency as pistol grips are great on Winchesters 870's.
Not me - I have nothing in the intermediate caliber range.
Really. Practice anyway.
Really? Why do you "advise" people?
Why would you do that? Or did you read that somewhere?
Very good advice. Some others not so much. The OP should read your wisdom.
