I never understood why New Wave and Punk were so closely linked? They couldn’t have been more different.

Stereotypes...the '80s, the predominant British influence, the fact that they were so unlike pop/rock of the '70s that they were lumped together by fans of the old school.

Middle America saw them as odd looking foreigners (or New Yorkers) who played a sound totally alien from their comfort zone of Skynyrd, Led Zep and Boston in some circles, Wings, Journey and Fleetwood Mac in others.

Punk rock and “new wave” (the latter of which the Brits call “new romantic” music) actually started in the USA. All the Brits did was inflate the same music with their accents and bands and send it back overseas. They actually got associated thanks to CBGB, who hosted both kinds of acts (e.g. Ramones, Talking Heads).

True. The Brits got more airplay on Top 40 radio, too.

Wasn’t that the original SSI plan?

Wasn’t that the original SSI plan?

In 1937 it certainly was for a working man. 65 years old then is the equivalent of at least 80 today.

It always seemed to me that these events were the beginning of the end of the wide ranging Top 40 radio format in North America. 1982 was a watershed year. Tons of New Wave and its adaptation by many tried and true acts, some of which went downright lame in the process (Styx, Stevie Wonder, Queen, Lionel Ritchie et al...their output from say 1983 to 1987 was bizarre.) Then the rise of rap from 1987 onward...Top 40 was splintered forever.

Contrast that to 1975, when in a major market like Boston, you could listen ONE station and in a single hour hear ZZ Top, The Carpenters, Chicago, The Rolling Stones, The Bellamy Brothers, Led Zep, Glen Campbell, The Beatles, Diana Ross, the Isely Brothers and The Starland Vocal Band.
