1/17/60  "The Evaporated Clue Matter"  Matter #674 Bob Bailey, Harry Bartell (Henry "Hank" Bascombe), Herb Vigran (Lieutenant Randolph "Randy" Singer), Charlton G. Young (Charlton Manson Kenworthy), Herb Ellis, Jack Edwards ; Writer/Producer/Director - Jack Johnstone ; Announcer - Dan Cubberly ; Expense Account Total = $574.00 ; A hurried trip to Alaska to look for a clue to a murder. And say, if you have been to Alaska, if you know anything about the customs, the manners of the people up there, especially their eating habits, well, it is quite possible that you'll find the solution to the case before I do - or maybe you will anyhow, because it all hangs on a tiny, seemingly unimportant, clue and yet - well, give a listen, see how well you can break down a killer's alibi. Yeah. Join us, won't you? Henry "Hank" Bascombe, Four State Insurance Company, New York City Office, 42nd Street and 5th Avenue, calls Johnny about a $189,000 straight life policy on the recently murdered Jonathan R. Kenworthy, the well liked owner of the Kenworthy Copper Mills. The beneficiary was his grandson useless 30 -33 year old Charlton Manson Kenworthy. Allen Barker is Charlton's buddy. Homicide Lieutenant Randy Singer is investigating the case. Johnny goes to see Randy. Kenworthy was killed by a blow to the back of the head with a fireplace poker. Charlton appears to have an air-tight alibi, apparently being in Alaska at the time of the murder. Officer Parker tells Randy that Charlton's fingerprints are on the poker just as Charlton enters Singer's office. Allen barker looks much like Charlton Kenworthy. Johnny flies to the Baronoff Hotel, Juneau, Alaska, where they say that Charlton was there. Thirty six hours later Johnny is back in Singer's office where Charlton his present. Johnny asks Charlton what he had for dinner Monday. After delaying, Charlton says that he had cream from the table in his coffee - but the hotel had evaporated milk. Allen Barker had gone to Alaska and posed as Charlton to establish an alibi for his friend to kill his grandfather. (Multi-Sponsored) (CBS)

Lieutenant Guthrie threatens to get Yudo, and Yudo threatens right back. The story was subsequently used on "The Line-Up" on May 13, 1952. (29:48)

10/3/52  "Cain" Episode #24 William Conrad (Matt Dillon), Parley Baer (Chester Proudfoot), Howard McNear (Doc Charles Adams), Georgia Ellis (Miss Kitty Russell), Harry Bartell (Cain Vestal), Larry Dobkin (Joel Adams) ; Director - Norman Macdonnell ; Writer - John Meston ; Music Composer/Conductor - Rex Koury ; Announcer - Clancey Cassels ; Doc invites Matt to Miss Kitty's Longbranch for a drink. He wants to talk about Cain Vestal - who will be dead in a couple of months. A nice fellow, he is a guitar playing musician passing through Dodge City on his way to Arizona who has consumption. The three invite Cain to their table where he plays a song on his guitar. Later the next day, Chester tells Dillon that he taught Cain to shoot a six-gun that he just bought. Dillon is surprised, having understood that Cain was to leave on the early morning stagecoach. Matt goes to see Kitty and asks about Cain. She says Cain became upset when no-good Joel Adams entered the Longbranch saloon, although the two didn't speak. Kitty says he is staying at the Dodge House. Matt goes to see Cain, asking him why he bought the six-gun. Cain says he is going to kill Joel Adams, although they never met. Matt says if he faces Adams in a fair fight, Adams will shoot him dead, and if Cain kills him any other way then he will hang. Cain says he is going to die soon anyway, and a month or two won't matter. Matt tells Cain that he will have to warn Adams. Adams says he never saw or heard of Cain. Later, Cain gets badly beaten up at the end of Front Street. He does not cooperate with Matt on who assaulted him. Matt goes to see Adams. As they are talking, Cain enters the room. Cain says that he and Adams had a friend in common, sixteen year old Julie Travers. Cain loved her but Adams took her away with a promise of marriage - but abandoned her in New Orleans, and then she committed suicide. Cain says that he is going to kill Adams now. Then he says there is something he always wanted to do - spit in Adams face. When he does, Adams shoots him dead. Matt arrests Adams for murder because Cain never went for his gun. (Sus.) 7/29/48 "Case of the Blood Stained Pearls" Episode #3  Jeff Chandler (Michael Shayne) ; (No opening or closing credits) ; Broadcaster's Guild syndication ; An old timer named George Peters knocks on Shayne's New Orleans apartment door and wants inside. He thinks he is being followed by people who would kill him. He thinks that they are the two friends with whom he has been living on a houseboat. He wants Shayne to protect three large pearls worth $1,000,000. They go to a jeweler, Forrester, who verifies their value. Back at Shayne's office, Forrester calls to say that he didn't want to break the old man's heart, but the fact is that the pearls are paste and worth less than $5. Later, Peters is knocking on Shayne's door, dying of four gunshot wounds. Clutched in his hand is the bag of pearls. Mr. Tompkins calls Shayne with the news that someone has broken into his office and torn it to pieces. Trying to get back to sleep, he hears somebody working at his door lock. Grabbing at his gun he heads for the door but stumbles, and the would-be intruder runs away. By the time he gets to the door no one is there. The next day he gets a telegram from someone who names a location where he wants to meet Shayne regarding George Peters. At the location he meets Mr. Brown, Mr. Johnson and his niece, Eve. A confrontation occurs and Shayne pulls out part of Brown's red beard. Later, Shayne meets with Eve and drinks poisoned coffee. Shayne's cab driver takes him for medical treatment. When he revives the Inspector is present. Shayne and the Inspector go to pick up a very nervous Forrester and then they go on to Johnson & Brown. Forrester repeats his statement that the pearls are fake. Shayne throws the pearl bag in the fire which causes Forrester to frantically reach in after them. Forrester admits that he killed Peters in an attempt to steal the pearls, and that he was the one who later tried to get into Shayne's apartment. Shayne had only thrown the bag in the fire when he noticed how nervous Forrester was. (Synd.) (26:54)

2/12/49 "The Lost Special" Episode # 67 Ben Wright (Inspector Collins), Parley Baer (Mr. Bland), John Dehner, Edgar Barrier, Lawrence Dobkin, Paul Frees (Mr. Dalton); Writer - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ; Adaptation - Les Crutchfield ; Editorial Supervision - John Dunkel ; Director - Norman Macdonnell ; Music - Ivan Ditmars ; Announcers - Paul Frees & Roy Rowan ; It is turn of the century western England, and a train vanishes from the face of the Earth. Scotland Yard Inspector Collins goes to Liverpool. James Bland, Liverpool train station master is speaking to Mr. Caratol and his speechless, hulking brute companion named Mr. Gomez. They need a train to start him immediately so he can get to Paris. Caratol, carrying a briefcase apparently containing important information, will pay for a special charter train to Manchester and then on to London. Caratol charters a 40 ton locomotive plus two carriages and three trainmen to carry he and Gomez to Manchester and London in broad daylight. Later, Bland says that his special train is 30 minutes late for its scheduled arrival in Manchester, and the local train that left after the special has arrived. The last station noting the passage of the special was Kenyon Junction. The station after that, Barton Moss, was only eight miles away. Collins and Bland go to Kenyon Station, and then carefully cover the tracks to Barton Moss on an engine manned by Mr. Hood. They see a dead man laying on the ground. It is John Slater, the engineer from the special with his neck broken. They then check three spur lines without finding anything. They arrive at Barton Moss. Collins sends a wire to Scotland Yard that he is going to call off the investigation until daylight. Three months pass, and after a spate of derisive newspaper articles, the case is inactive. Collins can't stop thinking about it. He goes back to Barton Moss and spends ten days investigating and assuring himself of the essentials of the solution, but he was just about as certain that he will never be able to prove it. The newspaper reports that a Mr. Dalton, carrying a briefcase, will be traveling on the same train tracks with the solution to the lost special train mystery. Collins expects something will happen as they ride through the danger area on the other side of Kenyon Junction. Collins explains to Bland that Dalton is a Scotland Yard agent, and there are 20 agents hidden in the coach behind with rifles. The train is sidetracked on a spur. Collins had found that the mine shaft at the end of the spur which was originally 900 feet deep is now just 400 feet deep. Collins arrests Bland for the murder of Slater, Caratol and Gomez. Collins has noted that Bland's bank account showed significant deposits after the special was lost. (Sus.) (CBS) (29:20)
