On the day of Apples 10th Retail Store anniversary, not everyones celebrating: in fact, a small but vocal group of Apple Store employees is working hard even now to unionize in response to what they term unfair treatment and compensation.
The group is called the Apple Retail Union, whose announcement includes this modus operandi:
We are launching today to get fellow employees, shoppers, and the world know that we work in one of the most demanding retail environments while suffering through unfair treatment and compensation among many other various issues We deserve better. Our time has come
Whether or not the Apple Retail Unions time has actually come or not we imagine Steve Jobs would have something to say about that it does seem as if there might be growing talk about unionizing. MacWorld says theyve heard growing reports amongst employees in the Pacific Northwest about unionizing, and even mention that an attempt at negotiating with management at the Alderwood Store occurred sometime recently, and may be the closest Apples retail employees have come so far to collective action.
Retail worker unions arent entirely unheard of, even though they can sometimes be rare. Whats more interesting is how Apple would react to attempts to unionize in its retail space. Would Steve Jobs turn union buster? The Apple Retail Union might be on the verge of finding out.
You know what you call retail employees that want to organize?
Unemployed former retail employees on the doll.
ping
If they don’t like working at the Apple store, go apply at the Microsoft store where you won’t be busy at all.
Popcorn.
hmmm. my move-on moron nephew is mgmt at Apple. Will he support the “downtrodden workers” or the paycheck from Steve Jobs?
I’m sure Steve Jobs would welcome unionized employees at Apple.
Unemployment rate is around 10%.
Finding people interested in maximizing the customer experience will not be difficult.
Apple's higher levels at their regional operations appear to be totally unaware of how you use statistical analysis to find weak managers who let in the thieves, and once you do that figuring out what to do with them!
this is why disney put disneyworld outside of california.
unions are just bad for employees and for business. These are not the unions of the robber barron era.
mighty forward of them aren’t they?
Hahahaha! Here’s an oxymoron, Unionized GENIUSES!!! Hahaha!
Reminds me of the Nelson Poynter and the St. Petersburg Times newspaper. Mr. Poynter was a HUGE supporter of ALL things union and socialist, EXCEPT when it came to HIS newspaper employees!!! He locked them out and printed the paper himself to break the union attempt to shut it down in the ‘60’s. Slimy hypocrite!!!
“a small but vocal group”
Communists always work according to this pattern.
Well right now..Apple is doing a totally X-Rated deed in actually hiring American citizens but I guess if this unionizing thing gets out of control Jobs could go pedal to the metal on the Open Borders Agenda.
Retail employees are overhead but necessary, union employees are liabilities.
Unions are so much like communism it will make the retail experience fun again!!
