Its not that Peter wouldn’t release the extended versions. The theatre owners wouldn’t run them because longer movies mean less daily showings. He hated cutting them down.

My guess is that is the same reason that cut the last Harry Potter film in half.

I’m talking about blu-ray edition. He released the blu-ray theatricals a year or so ago, and a lot of people were put out that they couldn’t release both on DVD together. I didn’t buy the theatrical, but I plan on buying the extended. There’s just so many that I have shelf room for!

That's why Peter is doing The Hobbit in two films. There is so much to cover, if he were to try to do just one film, it wouldn't do justice to the book.
