I saw what I thought was a 1973 remake. I was mistaken.

The Devil and Miss Jones was the movie that started my fascination for Classic movies. Up until I rented this VHS back in the early 80s, I wasn't much into classic movies, except for the occasional Bob Hope, Jerry Lewis or Marx brothers movie that would play Saturday afternoon. But this single movie, The Devil and Miss Jones did it. I loved the movie. I have been collecting classic movies, mostly comedies, ever since, with a collection well over 2000 today, and I still remember the movie that started it all.

Its not available on Netflix. So I discovered, to my surprise and disappointment. The Simpsons skipped to the next movie on our review list for viewing over the weekend. We saw what I consider an inferior film, mainly because of Cary Grant's less than inspired performance.

Cary Grant did so many movies that some of them just aren’t that good.

Cary Grant did so many movies that some of them just arent that good. That is the problem with being a standard-setter. An ordinary performance stands out from the crowd.
Did you ever catch the Tony Curtis tribute to Grant on TCM? Curtis tells of making "Some Like it Hot" and deciding to attempt a straight Cary Grant imitation in the scenes where he is pretending to be the millionaire playboy wooing Marilyn Monroe's character. After hearing that I could see it in the movie but Curtis' voice is about an octave higher than Cary Grant's.

About ten years ago I purchased a 1935 Gary Cooper movie on VHS from an internet seller because the movie was impossible to find and had never been released on tape or disk. It was called ‘Peter Ibbetson’, and the only way I could get any audio from the tape was by turning the volume to full blast, and even then you had to sit close to the TV. Great movie, though, and it was fun to watch it again after 30 years or so.

No, we don’t have cable.
I don’t think I’ve seen Some Like It Hot.

By the way, I don’t know if you are as old as me but do you remember the TV sitcom, ‘Love that Bob’ from the early ‘60s? I’ve think I’ve seen Robert Cummings’ name in at least a few of the movies that have been reviewed in your NY Times 70-years-gone archive. For some reason, I can still visualize the opening credits for that old TV show.
To: Lancey Howard
do you remember the TV sitcom, Love that Bob from the early 60s? You got me with that one. No recollection at all. It was probably about 1959-60 when I began to notice things other than cartoon and kid shows. But I missed 'Love that Bob.'
