Aerosmith Says Hell No When Asked to Reunite for the American Idol Finale
Vote for the Worst ^ | 05/14/2011

Remember how Steven Tyler has been saying that Aerosmith would perform with James Durbin at the Idol finale? Well it looks like he's the only band member who wants to do that. The Boston Herald reports that the other members of Aerosmith don't want to do it because they'd rather wait to promote something for their band. Besides, the last time we saw Joe Perry was when he played with Sanjaya at the season 6 finale. How could you possibly top that? (Answer: You can't)

PU must be a generational thing because for me rock wasn’t rock until heavy metal came to be in the early 70’s.I consider most of what was made in the 60’s equivelent to the AT40 and unlistenable. That was my parents generations music not mine.

Yours is a post that bears replying to. There was nearly 20 years of Rock & Roll prior to the heavy metal sounds that came in the late 1960s and early 1970s. R&R has a particular sound and it is characterized by a sound that makes you want to get up in dance (or at least move) for lack of a better definition. Heavy Metal does none of the above and the problem with it is that no one has even come close to doing it as well as Jimi Hendrix or Zeppelin did in the aforementioned time period. You cannot make up your own definitions.

Heavy Metal isn't R&R or even Rock because you don't rock and you don't roll. Most heavy metal bands are noise makers plain and simple. Very few have musical talent and no songs or tunes from these bands have any lasting value that I'm aware of. They appeal to adolescent tastes. If that's offensive, so be it. If you don't believe me, try this on for size. See if you can hum a tune from any of that music or for that matter even sing along with the song. You most probably cannot because there is no melody to speak of. And if you watch audiences listening to heavy metal groups, you will notice an absence of movement.

So I will conclude that Heavy Metal isn't rock & roll or even rock. It's should not appropriate that title just as Rap (even more horrific) shouldn't be mentioned as rock & roll or rap. It's another genre.

If I've offended some Aerosmith fans, good you need to be offended.

As Bob Seger sings:

Still like that old time rock and roll
That kind of music just soothes the soul
I reminisce about the days of old
With that old time rock and roll

Call me a relic call me what you will
Say I'm old fashioned say I'm over the hill
Today's music ain't got the same soul
I like that old time rock and roll

“So I will conclude that Heavy Metal isn't rock & roll or even rock.”

You may be right, strictly speaking, but the reality for me is that I really don't like a lot of what would be traditionally characterized as ‘rock’, although I very much appreciate its value. If I had to listen to CCR or, the Stones, or Chuck Berry, etc. for an extended period it would bore me, but that's obviously just me. For the record, I don't like most ‘heavy metal’.

Regarding your comment about musicianship, I agree that there are many out there who aren't technically proficient or innovative musicians, but many who are play music that you probably wouldn't consider Rock and Roll. For example, Steve Howe of Yes is an absolutely phenomenal guitarist, and Bill Bruford who played with Yes and King Crimson is a phenomenal drummer. Yes and Crimson were very innovative as well, but you either like their stuff, or you don't.

I agree. After you listen to him for awhile you can hear that what he is doing is amazing. But most people don’t like him and can’t appreciate his talent.

I’m not into Jame’s music choices, but his talent amazed me. He should have won. I’d like to see American Idol count votes by the number of people who buy the singer’s songs.

Freepers, vote for Scotty McCreery, the 17 year old with the fantastic voice who is being ostrasized all over the net by the Libs for asserting his Christian Conservative values.

He dared to kiss the cross he wears around his neck and sing a song mentioning Jesus!

I’d never watched Idol until a couple of seasons ago. Inlaws in Arkansas emailed me that their cousin had made it into the final 10, so I began watching. That cousin was Kris Allen and he won. That got me hooked on Idol.

It’s a bit disconcerting that there are really folks like you ‘out there’ that can quickly name singers that I have never heard of before! (LOL, because I’m 68 and don’t listen to that music, so that’s not intended as a rock thrown at you, SeekAndFind) I’m more into DooWop and R&R.

I had never heard of Steve Tyler until he became a judge on Idol. The guy is a freak! ....Randy seems to be the most consistent judge, as he will criticize when he feels it’s right. Christina softens every criticism like a mommy. Steve never criticizes and seldom has more than a few words to say.

Jacob is, at best, an off Broadway singer or a chorus singer in a church and should have been gone a month or so ago. Stefano is a wimpy little guy that was kept in by the pre-teen girls that read mags like Tigerbeat. James is a guy who was trying to emulate the flaming queen Lambert, who lost a couple of seasons ago, by wearing earings and screaming. Casey was a total loser and I was amazed that the judges “saved” him from being voted off and kept promoting him as being so great for several weeks. Casey is talented with instruments, stage presence and some of his singing, but he is more suited to doing a lounge act in a low scale Las Vegas casino.

Haley is hot, so she’ll get a lot of teen male votes. Both she and Lauren are very versatile and seem to quickly adapt to different styles of music. (I just use ‘styles’ because I can’t bring myself to use words like ‘genres’) Scotty definitely has a career ahead of him in the music industry, whether he wins or not. He sings better than some of the CW males who currently are doing tours and doing recordings.

I’m guessing the final two will be Haley and Scotty.

Sorry for the long posting. I’ve had a sleepless night.

Way to go, truthguy!

R&R and DooWop began in the early ‘50s. The music was unique, ‘danceable’ and the lyrics could be understood, unlike this hip hop rap crap of today and the heavy metal style of the ‘70-’80s. .......I will admit that there were a few Led Z tunes that I did like, along with ZZ Top.

"But What is Haley? She does — Country, Rock, Blues, Jazz, etc. "

She DOES have a strange sounding voice when she sings straight (no growling) - I think she very much emulates Billy Holiday - that 30's style.
