Your link to “Snakes of Massachusetts” is incomplete. It does not show the John Kerry, the Barney Frank, the Niki Tsongas, the Sal DiMasi, nor any of the other deadly snakes of the Commonwealth.

I believe that you nailed it. We live next to a pond, and the ground a few feet off the road is generally muddy, leading to a drainage brook.
