Teacher allegedly refused to hang up picture
ORANGE, Mass. (WWLP) - A civil rights controversy is brewing at an elementary school in the Town of Orange, and it all surrounds an11 year-old's drawing of the American Flag.
The family of Frankie Girard is claiming that their son's civil rights were violated after a teacher allegedly told him that hanging his picture of the American flag would offend another student.
The Butterfield Elementary School is at the center of controversy for the incident on Monday. According to Frankie Girards father, John, the boy was in art class drawing a picture.
"He was denied hanging the flag up. And, he asked if he could just even hang it on his desk, and he was told no. He could take the picture that he drew and take it home and be proud of it there, Girard said.
So, that is where it is, among the hundreds of other family pictures and military honors that adorn the walls of the Girard family home.

Dumb question but isn’t there a flag hanging in the classroom? I am not THAT old but I remeber a flag in the class. I’m 42.
The Orange Elementary Schools have applied for a Department of Education waiver allowing for district funds to be applied to costs associated with state mandated supplemental services for our low income students. The need for supplemental services to support our underperforming students is a requirement of the No Child Left Behind Act. The Orange Elementary Schools are dedicated to providing every child under our care with an equal opportunity to fulfill their academic potential.
Thus, they provide "every child with an equal opportunity" by providing some children with more opportunity?
Yes. Something is screwy here. The superintendent says that the American flag is up in every classroom. This may have been drawing a flag when he was supposed to be doing arithmatic or something else. We need to hear the teacher’s version.
