Concerns raised over shooting of unarmed bin Laden, burial

BERLIN/SINGAPORE (Reuters) - The killing of Osama bin Laden when he was unarmed has raised concerns the United States may have gone too far in acting as policeman, judge and executioner of the world's most wanted man.

But for several Muslim leaders, the more unsettling issue is whether the al Qaeda leader's burial at sea was contrary to Islamic practice.

The White House said on Tuesday that bin Laden had resisted the U.S. team which stormed his Pakistan hideout and that there had been concerns he would "oppose the capture operation".

Spokesman Jay Carney declined to specify what sort of resistance bin Laden offered but added: "We expected a great deal of resistance and were met with a great deal of resistance. There were many other people who were armed ... in the compound."

Former West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt told German TV the operation could have incalculable consequences in the Arab world at a time of unrest there.

"It was quite clearly a violation of international law," .

It was a view echoed by high-profile Australian human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson.

"It's not justice. It's a perversion of the term. Justice means taking someone to court, finding them guilty upon evidence and sentencing them," Robertson told Australian Broadcasting Corp television from London.

"This man has been subject to summary execution, and what is now appearing after a good deal of disinformation from the White House is it may well have been a cold-blooded assassination."

Robertson said bin Laden should have stood trial, just as World War Two Nazis were tried at Nuremburg or former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic was put on trial at the war crimes tribunal in The Hague after his arrest in 2001.

Yes - in a similar environment today the idiots would be asking:
1) Was his plane given a chance to land so the Admiral could surrender?
2) He couldn’t have possibly been in command of troops while the plane was flying! So he might have only been a “figure-head” and thus not a legal combatant!
3) His Geneva rights were violated by shooting down the plane!
4) Releasing the video of his plane being shot down is a violation of his human dignity.

etc....

Good point!

"...... better to not give him another chance."

Safe bet, once in custody that would NEVER happen.

What is nutty is the automatic assumption if captured, OBL would have been mirandized. He'd have been subjected to the mother of all interrogation, then held at Gitmo until he rotted. Instead, now the Muzzies have their martyr.

And he wasn't going to be a martyr at Gitmo or ADX Florence?

I prefer him dead on the bottom of the Arabian Sea.

So, Mr. Schmidt, where’s your outrage over the millions of Jews that your former leader killed?

And, how’s your Muslim population working out for you in ? In case you didn’t know it, those three terrorists that your government arrested last month were Muslims and were received orders from OBL.

Maybe instead of condemning us, you should be thanking us for once!

One must never forget the facts, that Obama has repeatedly shown that he will follow Islam first, America comes last.

Right now the spin, the lies, the smoke and mirrors is on overtime, funny thing is its not really aimed at America, its aimed at keeping the followers of OBL from knowing the real dope.

Oh I thought Biden was actually naming names, like individuals' names. Him mentioning the Navy SEALs, I don't know why that's a big deal - Saxby Chambliss feels comfortable discussing briefings and specifically mentioning Navy SEALs and the timeline. Given Chambliss' position in Congress and what committees he is on, if he feels comfortable publicly mentioning that it was Navy SEALs, then Panetta (whom he talked to Sunday night) or somebody told him it was okay.

He’s naming people very close to that group. Facilitates finding whodunnit.
And the Obama meeting with the team as a “hey, everybody, I’m meeting with the team that killed OBL” won’t help conceal identities either.

The names aren’t being blabbed outright, but this administration is trying to come awful close.

If you have specific instances where he blabbed to some reporter, post them or PM them. We've got Saxy Chambliss discussing with bloggers that it was Navy SEALs and describing the timeline of what happened and what he discussed with Panetta, we've got Naval ROTC instructors from the University where the head of the Navy SEALs graduated from talking about how it was Navy SEALs under his command, but if Biden is going above and beyond all of that, then we should be aware of that.

In thinking about it, none of us knows if it was in fact Navy SEALs. Biden, Chambliss, and others running their mouths, these are all people that know better. Maybe not Biden, but Chambliss definitely should know better. If they are out there running their mouths and talking about the SEALs, for all we know it could be another unit, including Delta or whatever the Army is calling it now. None of us were there, so none of us would know.

About the only thing we can be certain of is that the helicopters were probably flown by Nighstalkers, but then again that was an interesting looking tail rotor that had not been seen on any Nightstalker aircraft in the past....
