Concerns raised over shooting of unarmed bin Laden, burial
Orlando Sentinel ^ | May 4, 2011 | Erik Kirschbaum and Jonathan Thatcher

BERLIN/SINGAPORE (Reuters) - The killing of Osama bin Laden when he was unarmed has raised concerns the United States may have gone too far in acting as policeman, judge and executioner of the world's most wanted man.

But for several Muslim leaders, the more unsettling issue is whether the al Qaeda leader's burial at sea was contrary to Islamic practice.

The White House said on Tuesday that bin Laden had resisted the U.S. team which stormed his Pakistan hideout and that there had been concerns he would "oppose the capture operation".

Spokesman Jay Carney declined to specify what sort of resistance bin Laden offered but added: "We expected a great deal of resistance and were met with a great deal of resistance. There were many other people who were armed ... in the compound."

Former West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt told German TV the operation could have incalculable consequences in the Arab world at a time of unrest there.

"It was quite clearly a violation of international law," .

It was a view echoed by high-profile Australian human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson.

"It's not justice. It's a perversion of the term. Justice means taking someone to court, finding them guilty upon evidence and sentencing them," Robertson told Australian Broadcasting Corp television from London.

"This man has been subject to summary execution, and what is now appearing after a good deal of disinformation from the White House is it may well have been a cold-blooded assassination."

Robertson said bin Laden should have stood trial, just as World War Two Nazis were tried at Nuremburg or former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic was put on trial at the war crimes tribunal in The Hague after his arrest in 2001.

I have a sick feeling the administration will throw our SEALs under the bus.

It is at the very least going to be suggested by some bunghole in the administration because they are die-hard commie pinkos and can't stand our brave men and women in the military.

“It’s not justice. It’s a perversion of the term. Justice means taking someone to court, finding them guilty upon evidence and sentencing them,”....

You would have thought a former ACLU attorney, now president, would have been very careful to take care of Osama’s civil rights!....Did the Navy Seals read him his Miranda rights first?

"I have a sick feeling the administration will throw our SEALs under the bus."

Get ready for it. He'll have to, to regain his base.

On Monday all reports were it was a "kill" mission.
On Tuesday it was "kill or capture"..Brennan said: "If we had the opportunity to take Bin Laden alive, if he didn't present any threat, the individuals involved were able and prepared to do that."
But the White House said...“on orders of the President, a small U.S. team assaulted a secure compound in an affluent suburb of Islamabad to capture or kill Osama bin Laden.”

At this rate by the end of the week it will have been a "capture" mission.

Perhaps Mr. Schmidt should talk to the family of the young lady pictured standing, dazed, in a large hole on the 86th floor of the World Trade Center. Perhaps he should talk to the families of the DC schoolchildren who were passengers on the plane bin Laden’s flunkies flew into the Pentagon. Perhaps he should talk to the children who lost both their parents in the World Trade Center. I suspect bin Laden is in a place now where there are nasty creatures with spiny wings, that is constantly hot, and where to get there he first had to run a gauntlet of young brokers, bond traders and serving staff who were at work in the WTC on 9/11.

“I’m concerned that there was an Islamic ceremony on a US ship.”

Yes- implies bringing a cleric or two onboard a carrier. Unless our chaplains now include Imams and clerics, which might be the case.

Thinking about this a bit more, there ARE Muslims in our services, what if one of them needs a burial at sea? Some Muslim service run by the appropriate Muslim official would be done.

I bet we’ll find Muslim chaplains where there are Muslim servicemen.

Yep - then there is the little detail that we are AT WAR!

Countries get invaded - people get killed in a war. That is what the term MEANS!

OBL was the TOP of the food chain of our enemy in this war. He was a legitimate military target. End of discussion.

I don't think that's the question. Of course he's a target. As Crowley was pointing out on the Factor, this is how we will be doing battle with these guys. I agree.

We got lucky and caught OBL with his pants down. So what's the protocol? We've taken other top guys into custody. But shoot the top banana? Stupid.

Who knows, there may have been a decision made to off him so Obama wouldn't even have the chance of a criminal trial.

You missed my point entirely - there shouldn’t be any questions. He’s dead - he deserves to be dead. He should have been dead 10 years ago - it just took this long to catch up to him.

I wonder if Mr Schmidt considers Auschwitz, Belsen, Dachau, etc. "violations of international law?"

I wouldn’t care if they hung him upside down and cut his head off with a spork on live T.V., then feed him to pigs. He got more than he deserved.

The rest of the filthy pigs who think they are going to kill innocent Americans better get a clue to how we feel, not the way are spineless politicians feel.

Wow that’s bad I should have read my own post.

It should say: get a clue as to how we feel, not the way our spineless politicians feel.

I got as far as the second sentence and these questions immediately came to mind:

  1. Raised concerns for whom?
  2. Who is paying Reuters to play the role of Josef Goebbels for Islamofascism?
  3. Who gives a f*** what Muslim clerics think?
  4. Where were these clerics when 3,000 plus innocent Americans and our guests were being murdered on OBL's orders? Weren't they passing out celebration candy on the Gaza strip?
  5. Could someone please post a graphic of that busted "Give a Damn" meter?

I think we should have sawed off his head and displayed it at Ground Zero. That would have "showed respect for Islamic tradition."

The U.S. deliberately undertook a successful mission to kill Admiral Yamamoto in WW2.

Hey Socialist Schmidt. I guess you think the Germans acted illegally when they tried to assassinate your National Socialist Hitler during WW 2, and Hitler was legally right to torture the surviving conspirators to death, right? Seeing as how Hitler was the legally elected Chancellor and all.

Osama bin Laden declared war against America. He chose an amorphous battlefield and no insignia for combatants for reasons that served his cause. Osama bin Laden died on his battlefield in his ‘uniform’. Perfectly just and legal by traditional Western standards of war. “War”, mind you NOT criminality.

I’m concerned that there was an Islamic ceremony on a US ship. How dare Obama. Only more proof that he’s a muzzie.

I view his burial on the USS Carl Vinson as the biggest waterboarding in history.

I don't care whether he was in the nude and clearly unarmed or strapped up with explosives and carrying a pistol in each hand, none of our guys were killed in the raid and that's all that matters. Bin Laden has killed enough Americans, better to not give him another chance.
