The United States is treating Osama bin Laden's body in "accordance with Islamic practice," a White House official says.
President Obama announced Sunday night that American forces killed bin Laden in Pakistan and that they took his body afterward. He said no Americans were harmed in the fight.
Asked how bin Laden's body will be treated, a senior administration official told reporters on a conference call that "we are ensuring that is handled in accordance with Islamic practice and tradition."
The official, who refused to be identified, said the matter is "something that we take very seriously, and so, therefore, this is being handled in an appropriate manner."

I read somewhere online that Muslim burials require that the corpse be buried within 24 hours of death. I don’t know if this is true but if it is, how can they possibly claim he was buried in accordance when some reports say he was killed last week? I find it hard to believe he was brought from Pakistan to Boston, had DNA tests done on him to match to his sister’s material, and then buried in accordance with Muslim tradition all within 24 hours. Not saying it’s impossible or it’s all a conspiracy or anything like that just that it seems like a LOT of stuff to happen in 24 hours (assuming that tradition is true).

The deceased is then taken to the cemetery for burial (al-dafin). While all members of the community attend the funeral prayers, only the men of the community accompany the body to the gravesite. It is preferred for a Muslim to be buried where he or she died, and not be transported to another location or country (which may cause delays or require embalming the body). If available, a cemetery (or section of one) set aside for Muslims is preferred. The deceased is laid in the grave (without a coffin if permitted by local law) on his or her right side, facing Mecca.
