SEATTLE - The city of Seattle has reached a $1.5 million settlement of claims brought by the family of slain woodcarver John T. Williams, who was shot dead by Seattle Police Officer Ian Birk last August.
The settlement was reached after a mediation involving representatives of the John T. Williams estate, Williams mother and the city.
The Williams family, which earlier failed in its attempts to get criminal charges filed against Birk, expressed relief that the matter could be resolved early without extended and costly litigation.
"This is one step towards justice, but it is only a step. Nothing can make up for the loss of my brother," said Rick Williams, who is the administrator of the John T. Williams estate.
Under the agreement, $250,000 will go into a trust fund for Williams' mother, Ida Edward. The remaining $1.25 million will be placed into escrow while distribution issues are resolved and approved by the court.

Yes and to crime/corruption and to the Washington State News topics... the mods remove them and ship these posts off to chat because they know fewer folks will see it and will get less replies.
They do it intentionally to suppress this type of news...
Some here will defend the LEO regardless of what they do.

Yup. Where’s thefactor?
That's interesting
What I've noticed, is there seem to be endless stories about far off places, like Outer Mongolia, 3rd world rebels running around some dusty streets of some obscure trashed country, or Libyan street gangs raping someone...Yet local news, U.S. news, seems to be more scrutinized, monitored and or scrubbed.
Like this news story for instance being put into a chat area, as you said.
Maybe Jim Rob needs to create a “local news” forum where we can post stuff like this.
That would be fine by me and it would make alot more sense than “chat”...
Wow. Dunkin donuts emptied out.
I only watched it about 1/4 the way through. I got tired of listening to the thin blue line macho bs, but where in the video does it show the shoot?
Yeah, I forgot about him. Where'd he go?
Isn’t all news “local”, to some degree?
Ian Birk should be facing the electric chair, IMO.
Please continue to persevere in your attempts to present the ugly truth.
Along with many other FReepers,I tried to gather support to prevent the court ordered execution by intentional starvation and dehydration of Terri Schiavo.
We failed in our primary goal, obviously.
Terri Schiavo was executed by Court orders because...well we really don't know why, do we? sarcasm
Her lifetime medical palliative care needs were supposed to have been paid for by the “awards” of the medical malpractice lawsuits won on her behalf.
Yeah, that worked out well.
A cop openly shoots and kills a man for no reason, it's all caught on tape, and some people still think the dead man must have done something to deserve it, because a cop can't possibly be guilty of murder.
I’m glad the city is paying something, but the cop should be charged at least with manslaughter. (I think a good prosecutor could have gotten a conviction on that. My guess is the prosecutor didn’t want to ruffle cop feathers, for whatever reason.)
I watched the video, and it is just incredible. If *I* had been the poor guy who was accosted by the cop, I would have gotten shot too! Because just about the time I would have figured out that someone *behind me* was yelling at me, and finally figured it out a bit, and turned around . . . I would have been shot dead. I think the same is true for many people. Plus the poor man was deaf. Anyone who can watch that video and tell me it is NOT a bad shoot is not living in the same world I am.
Not only that the cop could have, should have known he was deaf.
In downtown Seattle the cops better know who the homeless are, what are their quirks etc.
I am glad the city paid for what they did to that poor man. The video of that incident haunts me. It was like watching something out of Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union.
One thing about the USSA is that it is an equal opportunity slayer of the innocent. Remember that academy grad military guy who was murdered in the store for legally carrying a gun? He was murdered while laying on the floor. I wonder if his family got paid for the slaughter of their beautiful son?
Yes the States can screw up too...but IIRC this site was begun over the Clinton depredations.
Cheers!
I know all about it. I’ve been on the receiving end of it.
Most Cops are good guys.
I once thought that too, until I began reading reports like this one. Which surveyed really opened my eyes...
The Measurement of Police Integrity
Corruption is extremely difficult to study in a direct, quantitative, and empirical manner. Because most incidents of corruption are never reported or recorded, official data on corruption are best regarded as measures of a police agencys anticorruption activity, not the actual level of corruption. Even with assurances of confidentiality, police officers are un-likely to be willing to report their own or another officers corrupt activities.

Power always corrupts.
Actually I think David Brin said it best...
“It’s said that “power corrupts,” but actually it’s more true that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power.”
I have never had the slightest desire for power.
I took a quick look at the site and this is one that they chose to print.
The horror and brutality made me shudder, but the innocent victim should make a few bucks on the deal.
Garbage.
