Reader links. And is France getting more fallout that California? (No.)

TrueNorth found an article saying the risk in Europe from Fukushima fallout is “no longer negligible”.

Children up to two years old are the most vulnerable and ingestion of 50 becquerel (Bq) is enough to deliver to the body a dose of 10 mSv, according to the institute.

There’s no way that’s enough for a “body” dose of 10 mSv, or 1 rem. But since they’re talking about I-131, I’ll assume they mean “thyroid dose”. Thyroid and body aren’t interchangable.

Radioactive iodine-131 values …0,08 Bq/kg in salad, spinach and leeks in Aix-en-Provence, 0,17 Bq per litre in milk in Lourdes and 2,1 Bq per litre in goats milk in Clansayes.

Those numbers seem much larger than the ones I saw for California on Radnet, and there’s no way France is getting more activity than CA. Lemme check…

I see 0.152 Bq/l for milk, for L.A. on April 11. Here, if the link to my search page works. Rereading the article I see this:

Data for the west coast of the United States, which received the Fukushima radioactive fallout 6-10 days before France, reveals that levels of radioactive iodine-131 concentration are 8-10 times higher

Assuming the comma in “0,17 Bq per litre in milk” is a decimal point, this data doesn’t add up. Europe is over-reporting or the EPA is under-reporting. Never discount the possibility of a misplaced decimal point.

So Wormme performed the same EPA search yesterday that I performed today but today's values for the same locations, dates and Iodine 131 levels for pasteurized milk are much much larger?? Yesterday LA's value was .152 and today that same reading is 4.1 ?????

Wormme provided this link to EPA data for California showing Iodine-131 levels for California and wonders why it's lower than Fukushima levels received by France:

Note that EPA levels when Wormme checked were as follows:

LOS ANGELES, CA 28-MAR-11 >>>>>>> 0.106 Bq/L

LOS ANGELES, CA 13-APR-11 >>>>>>> 0.152 Bq/L

OAKLAND, CA 13-APR-11 >>>>>>> 0.139 Bq/L

SAN FRANCISCO, CA 28-MAR-11 >>>>>>> 0.111 Bq/L

Here's his link for his search: http://oaspub.epa.gov/enviro/erams_query_v2.simple_output?Llocation=State&subloc=CA&media=PASTEURIZED+MILK&radi=Iodine-131&Fromyear=2011&Toyear=2011&units=SI

After reading Wormme's post where he wonders why CA levels are lower than France's, I went to EPA site TODAY and performed the same search. The Iodine-131 levels for those same dates he searched on seem to have been revised upwards drastically:

LOS ANGELES, CA 28-MAR-11 >>>>>> 2.86 pCi/L

LOS ANGELES, CA 13-APR-11 >>>>>> 4.1 pCi/L

OAKLAND, CA 13-APR-11 >>>>>> 3.75 pCi/L

SAN FRANCISCO, CA 28-MAR-11 >>>>>> 3 pCi/L

Here's my search: http://oaspub.epa.gov/enviro/erams_query_v2.simple_output?Llocation=State&subloc=CA&media=PASTEURIZED+MILK&radi=Iodine-131&Fromyear=2011&Toyear=2011&units=Traditional

AHA!!!!! DIfferent Units. Wormme is using Bql/Liter and my search was pCi/L.

I couldn’t believe the difference! Excuse the mistake!

Good question!

I hope California moms are watching these numbers carefully.
