In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
ob·lo·quy [ob-luh-kwee] noun, plural -quies.
1. censure, blame, or abusive language aimed at a person or thing, especially by numerous persons or by the general public.
2. discredit, disgrace, or bad repute resulting from public blame, abuse, or denunciation.
Example sentence:
"Not all writers or artists seek or ably perform a public role, and those who do risk obloquy and derision, even in free societies."
Salman Rushdie, New York Times, April 20, 2011
Etymology:
142575; late Middle English. Obloquy means "harsh or critical statements about someone," and also "the condition of someone who lost the respect of other people" both of which apply here. It's a word far more often written than spoken, with a formal tone that suits a serious issue. It comes from the Latin obloquy, "to speak against," from ob- "against" + loqui to "speak" (making it a relative of words like soliloquy and elocution).
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
Sarah Palin is very pretty and we have neither of us seen a BAD pic of her and who else can you say that about?

Barney Stinson, but you don’t know who that is. I have been able to catch a lot of this show on reruns since I’ve been convalescing. Never watched it before, except for once on an airplane.
hopefully the week of rest for the caps will not have completely RUSTED them! reports of OV biking to G’town for Gtown cupcakes, and biking in flip flops back and forth from practice at Kettler iceplex to his home in Arlington. Several others were at the nat’s game the other night.
Nonsense! What does the public's fear and disgust at multi-trillion dollar debt have to do with Obama's OTHER-ness? Ditto for the healthcare fiasco, the czars, the kow-towing to our enemies, the crude treatment of our allies (Winston Churchill bust, anyone?)
Obama has used the race card widely and well. I know many people who voted for him, explaining: "It would be great to throw off any stigma of racism by proving to the world that Americans are open-minded enough to elect a Black President."
And, of course, once in office, the libs (like your "friend") immediately deflect any and all criticism of Obama by using a corollary of the commutative law of mathematics, i.e., If a=b and b=c, then a=c. Their version is: If you criticize Obama and Obama is Black, then you are criticizing him because he is Black.
After many frustrating conversations, emails, and open discussions with liberals, I have come to the (somewhat cowardly, but mentally soothing) conclusion that I no longer engage in any political discourse with them. The odds of changing a liberal's mind is approximately equal to the odds of a liberal changing mine, or yours: zero. So, save yourself the agita and keep discussions with them at the level of the weather or the sports scores.
what, you think he’s very pretty?
No, the episode I saw last night proved that there is never a bad picture taken of him.
i vehemently made the point that the opposition to Obams was policy-based, but she was hung up on the birth certificate/school records stuff and was just apoplectic that it demonstrated racism [much like whoopi goldberg apparently] We don’t discuss politics daily by any stretch and we accept that we will never change each other’s mind. i do think there is something to be said for putting a human face to the opposition. and if she doesn’t have any other conservatives to talk to, i’d like to think that i do a decent job of representing our side.
He should wear proper footwear. If he stubs a toe or something, they’ll be hell to pay.
I had actually been in Europe for 3 weeks with my grammy right before the Charles/Diana wedding, and woke up with jetlag at 4:00am, went and turned on the TV, and there was the wedding! It feels like a moral imperative to watch it. Was just in London last month, and we toured Westminster Abbey. It will be cool to see it so soon after.
i have very little recollection of paying much attention to charles/di. what year was that? i am trying to figure out what point of my life that was. VERY cool to see the Abbey for the ceremony with you just having been!
Bolts reportedly already in town, flying here directly from Pgh last night.
Well, I know I was 14, so I know it was exactly 30 years ago (whoops, just gave away my age!!) so it must have been 1981. How was that for some convoluted addition/subtraction?
Prince Rebus?
No family left in ‘Bama. They all died in prison, or were shot by Revenuers. I am sad about the people who died but can’t say I’m sorry Tuscaloosa got hit. That’s where the Tide Rolls.
We’ve been sandbagging against flooding here. The Mobile Emergency Command Post was set up in the church parking lot and they sandbagged all night. Several road closings due to flooding on the way to work.
Still bitter about the poisoned oaks on Toomer's Corner, eh?
George W. Bush: Drill more to lower gas prices (Bush proves again he's smarter than Obama) - post 23
Some FReepers with selective memory loss question why Bush speaks out now on domestic drilling but didn't do anything about it when he was president -- forgetting that for 6 years the senate democrats repeatedly filibustered multiple bills that would have had oil flowing from ANWR by now.
It must have been around 80 or 81 or 82.
All I remember is Diana’s dress had a really long train.
Well i was in law school from 1980-83, so that’s what i had going on at that time, i guess.
