HARTFORD— — Now that Pedro Miranda has been convicted of the 1988 killing of a 17-year-old girl at the Nelton Court housing project, it is time for Miguel Roman, the man who wrongfully served 20 years in prison for the crime, to seek justice.

Roman is suing the city of Hartford and the police officers who investigated the slaying of Carmen Lopez, seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages, in federal court.

I hope he wins his lawsuit. No amount of money can ever replace his reputation or the lost years of his life, but the clowns who sent him to prison should be accountable for their screw up.

Lawsuits against municipalities are easy to win.

First, shouldn't he apply for a Governor's pardon?

Could he have been an accomplice?

What happened didn’t anyone read him his rights? His great, great uncle must be so disappointed.

Mirandia was the "one-armed man". He was investigated for the crime, but the corrupt cops went for the easy conviction by picking up Miguel Roman, the victims ex-boyfriend, and claiming that, while in custody, he confessed to a jailhouse snitch.

Leaving Miranda free to rape again. Which he did.

Thanks, I should have read the story. The coincidence of names was too much.

Ditto.

Some subset of those falsely convicted in this way are criminals who escaped detection for other crimes, making conviction for a crime they didn’t commit a type of ironic poetic justice. I suspect the cops go after such a person, as convicting somebody with a long record has got to be easier.

But that should not affect this particular individual’s right to compensation. This is one case where I think the taxpayers should pay out.

There should also be punishment where appropriate for those who mishandled the case, including criminal prosecution and jail time if it can be proven they did so knowingly.

If you are outraged by what happened to this guy, you should read about Edwin Wilson.
