The Power of P90X
Men's Health ^ | December 18, 2010 | Joe Kita

Posted on 04/25/2011 5:36:18 PM PDT by Immerito

Tony Horton used to be a stand-up comedian. Now he's the front man for P90X and a millionaire exercise guru. So is he an infomercial salesman? Or a fitness savior?

*****

Beyond the compelling marketing, there are two reasons why P90X is so popular. First, Horton is the perfect front man. At 5´10* and 180 pounds with 9 percent body fat, he is genuinely ripped. He says he can consecutively do 110 pushups, 80 dips, 35 pullups, and eight 260-pound lat pulls. Plus, he can hold a handstand for a minute and even do a backflip off a wall. To prove it, he often drops to the floor and pumps out a few reps of whatever exercise he's talking about. His motto, which he wears on the back of his shirt, is "Bring It!" Along with the brawn, he has a full head of hair and—even under the harsh QVC makeup lights—no telltale signs of any nips or tucks. And, to the delight of the housedress set, he's not married.

But second, and most important, P90X—unlike the garbage heap of other "miracle" infomercial products—can deliver results. That's because it's built on such proven fitness principles as consistency, intensity, and variety, and you don't need special gadgets—just a pullup bar and dumbbells (or resistance bands). Simply pop a disc into your DVD player, move the couch out of the way, and follow along with Tony and his gang.

Reviewing, for you, once again:

Jonty 30: “Steroids do work. It’s why bodybuilders take them.

Aside from shrinkage issues, they work.

I would never take them myself. I’d rather bench 200 lbs, knowing that I worked hard to be able to do that, rather than 500 lbs knowing that I had help doing and had future health problems as a consequence.”

Allmost: “Temporarily. Enjoy being a cattle hormone recipient. Stay away from actual humans please.”

Why the cheap potshot?

I do the Turbo Jams. Had worked up to doing the Chalean Xtreme and went and broke my ankle last summer, two places, first day of vacation so was laid up for 3 months. Back to working out and doing Turbo Jam and Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred with Weights. My 17 yr. DD is doing my Chalean Extreme DVD’s now, she loves them and also dances 3 hours a week and marching band practice and games during Summer & Fall several times a week . . .and even she was sore the first week or so after beginning them. Not sure IF she’ll want Fire or Insanity next.

Tony definitely moves too fast for a beer between sets. We've had 90x for about a year. I went from 235 to 195. Both sons can run circles around me though.

We have a 90 lb ea. Powerblock dumbbell set with a bench, and a pull-up bar in the hall. The first addition I bought was a great big fan. I get hot moving that fast.

It's great for winter when it's just to cold to run or shoot hoops, and not as boring as lifting free weights or the treadmill or stationary bike. Further, you can just do it right now... no driving, no membership, no waiting for a machine... no b.s.

Great stuff, I highly recommend it.

The information itself is not new. It’s been known for about 60 years as to the effectiveness of HIT training.

What 90X does though is package the information in a usable way for most consumers, because most people know very little about training effectively for good results.

It’s not a lot of money to be the program and I think that, even if you only learned one thing you didn’t know before, it’s worth the money. But that is my opinion.

P90x is not available at the Walmarts here. (Perhaps it was regionally released???), but there is a $30 knockoff being sold at Target (The title of the knockoff is “Supreme 90 Day Workout”, IIRC.)

Am I to take it that you are incapable of providing an intellectually honest defense for your own posts?

True; Beachbody and Amazon offer it online. I’m sure other retailers do as well.

Thanks for the response. But is 90x HIT? It doesn’t really sound like HIT to me.

Maybe I will check it out once I am finished with this current routine (a couple more months).

Thank you for confirming your intellectual dishonesty. While I regret your decision to remain at the level of the average liberal in that respect, I trust that you will, in time, realize that intellectual honesty is one of the character traits that separates liberals from conservatives.

For any estrogen-based lifeforms clicking on this thread, I can highly recommend Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred. It’s a little more monotonous, but you get that same “train til you puke” effectiveness while saving $193. After a couple months you’ll be able to splurge on skinny jeans guilt free....

I believe that the TurboFire program incorporates HIIT training. P90x is based on the theory of “muscle confusion”.

Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred is a good start, but ladies who want more of an advanced workout should consider P90x (along with other advanced workout options).
