Interesting look at the best and worst picks in the NFL on a franchise-by-franchise basis.
I tend to agree with many of the picks - it's hard to find a worst first-rounder in Charger history than Ryan Leaf or a better Indianapolis Colt pick than Peyton.
A couple though, I'm not as sure about out. Mike Junkin has to be near the top for 1st round busts in Cleveland Brown history, for example. I'll let Cleveland FReepers decide if he was worse than Courtney Brown, however. :-)

I’m not going to the source, but i will bet that Ryan Leaf appears on that list.

Not surprised JaMarcus “Purple Drank” Russell made the list.

Yep. Leaf is listed as the worst pick for the Chargers, with LaDainian Tomlinson listed as their best-ever 1st rounder.

San Francisco 49ers
Worst: QB Jim Druckenmiller, Virginia Tech, 1997
Well, yes - Druckenmiller did suck. But he was a low first round pick, made back when the 49ers were declining from their years of greatness but hadn't crashed yet. Alex Smith was the #1 overall pick in 2005. I'd have to go with Smith as the biggest bust in 49ers history.
Of course, the 49ers have had a number of lousy #1 picks in the decade-plus since the Yorks have taken over and destroyed the franchise - Rashaun Woods, Kwame Harris, Mike Rumph, Kentwan Balmer. But getting picked #1 overall and failing miserably is a distinction conferred only on a select few.

I think there's a serious case to be made for JaMarcus as the worst #1 overall and first-round pick of all time. Other guys have been drafted #1, put forth some kind of effort and failed. JaMarcus never made any effort whatsoever. He got his signing bonus and never even bothered to pretend that he was going to do anything to earn it.

Smith’s difficulties are mostly due to the perviousness of the SF offensive line.
No quarterback could possibly thrive behind that pile of sissies. Watch for Smith to do well in the coming years.

My nomination for the worst draft choice in NFL history: The Raiders selecting Jamarcus Russell as the first OVERALL pick.

Granted, the 49ers OL hasn't been good. But utter mediocrities like Shaun Hill and JT O'Sullivan have outplayed Smith behind that OL during his tenure. And Smith is heading into his 7th season in the league - there have been no flashes of brilliance and precious few flashes of adequacy.

I am showing my age and I don’t even watch the NFL any longer but I saw this thread and was reading the busts and I saw the Raiders and I always thought back to the bust Mark Wilson from Brigham young. He was supposed to be the greatest but was a total bust and their owner, Al Davis stuck with him until the bitter end.

Tony Mandarich. Saw an article on him, he’s now a photographer in Arizona. While a bust originally in Green Bay, he was actually serviceable later in his career in Indianapolis.

Marc Wilson was inconsistent. He was hot and cold. Russell was consistently bad.

Courtney Brown’s career and vision was ruined by an official’s flag hitting him in the eye. Not his fault or management’s.
