The Royal Wedding has divided the nation - some breathlessly counting down the days, others rolling their eyes over the growing excitement. And now Jerry Seinfeld has weighed in on the upcoming nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton, calling the wedding 'a circus act.' The comedian, promoting his stand-up show at the O2 on June 3, will undoubtedly

Are you kidding? We have THE MESSIAH!!!
As you point out, there are the Kennedys. And I don't recall being able to escape news about Chelsea's wedding.
Or the latest Hollywood "wedding" for that matter.
The royals are symbols of the nation at large, and of Britain's past and heritage. I personally wish Britain were more like it was, say, 100 years ago than it is now.
Bunch of incessant whiners on this thread.
Comedian is bad. Couple is bad. Hollywood sucks. She is no Diana, he hates Christians, what about the Kennedys, who cares about celebs...? Sheesh. Just jump off a bridge if everything offends you.
It’s too early in the day to be drunk, WTH are you thinkin’?
What did you mean by that?
What I find most funny about this thread is the apparent assumption for some that Seinfeld is NOT speaking as a comedian, but rather as a social commentator.
Uh folks, he’s a sarcastic comic making sarcastic observations.
Trying to deconstruct his comments so that they reflect poorly on him is silly. He is doing what he does.
The only thing that offends me are Seminoles.
“Hey, how ‘bout that Royal Wedding...what’s up with that?”
FUJS
Chopping my own penis off with a butter knife would be more funny and far more entertaining than Jerry Seinfeld could EVER be.
Your mileage may very.
I guess it takes a circus act to know one.
“He is doing what he does.”
Yes. But his body of work is so shallow and vapid, I find it amazing he can look in the mirror in the morning after criticizing someone else for being shallow and vapid.
Besides, I'm sick of the iconoclasts in this country who destroy our traditions for no other reason than thats what iconoclasts do.
He’s so gay!
Yeah, they’re a circus act - but when the same type and degree of hoopla and media attention is given to butt-headed actors and actresses (and comedians) from Hollywood... now THAT’S show business!
Someone’s a little bit full of himself.
One day, this couple will likely be King and Queen of all 16 nations of the Commonwealth realm. As King, William would be “Head of State” for each of those nations (including the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand ...). Also, as King, William would be “Head of the Commonwealth”, an organization of 53 nations, with a population over 2 billion people. While the epicentre of wedding frenzy will be in Britain, the event will be meaningful for over 1/3 of the world's population.
We, in the Commonwealth realm, separate the roles of “Head of State” and “Head of Government”. We venerate the former, as the symbol of our respective nations (and a common link). We treat the later with no more or less respect than any elected politician deserves.
The U.S.of A. had a successful revolution, to rid itself of the Monarchy. By not separating the roles of “Head of State” and “Head of Government”; you have allowed many of the trappings of monarchy to slide back in, and rest on the office of the POTUS. Consider the pomp and circumstance surrounding the “State of the Union” address, and the excessive difference shown to the POTUS at these events.
Interesting point. Perhaps, one day soon, America will rid itself of it’s oppressive (and hidden) Head of State.
