By now, it should be obvious that anyone hoping party insiders will draft a Jeb Bush or Chris Christie or Rick Perry to rescue the lackluster Republican 2012 field from itself is living in a hopeless fantasyland. But in case you need even more evidence, consider this: Dark-horse candidates who arent fully committed to running for president, deep within their bones, have a terrible track record of misfires and flameouts.

If you believed something stupid the guy said, you're still showing a propensity towards derangement. Now why don't you show us this great GOP plan to draft Thompson, or just admit it's a dumb thing to say.
I think Fred could have beat both McCainiac and the Kenyan Fraud if Fred had had the fire in the belly necessary to win the prize. He didn’t, which is a shame.
Speaking of Fred - saw him on TV ad for some upcoming program. Looks like he has new teeth.
It turned out he was not a good candidate. He either didn't have the fire to get in, or didn't have good political instincts of how to win.
He did. The "no fire in the belly" is a canard that is easily disproven by looking at how he campaigned -- the only candidate to make more campaign appearances than Thompson was, oddly enough, McCain.
No, what did Thompson is was the depressing fact that you have to have all of your ducks (i.e., endorsements, "ground game", etc.) lined up well in advance before you jump in. That killed him in South Carolina, the one state that he had to win.
Joining the race (officially) on the later side shouldn't be a problem if you've already put the pieces in place. It's only trying to get in late without having any real infrastructure that seems to be insurmountable.
Absolutely. The Republicans always pick the famous old guy that’s been around.
Palin gets in the race, it’s a different story. She could be seen as next in line. So could Gingrich, and to a lesser degree Romney and Huckabee.
Hair and things like that are more important to Democratic primary voters.
Republicans on the Name Recognition thing - not only do they know the name, they know that the name is of a Republican Politican who has been on TV a lot for years.
Fred was just very tired. He lost the fire and must have realized that in addition to his poor health, the Presidency would have been too much for him to handle physically.
I liked many of his positions and especially his manor, but he was still a Washington politician like the rest of them.
FDT was a real disappointment, giving up like that.
I predicted he would in 2007, and did I ever get flamed for that! Similar to another candidate being marketed here this time around.
Well aren't you just the
Didn’t his mother die in the middle of the campaign?
Yes, but it was after South Carolina that her health really started to fade. By then, Thompson had already lost any real chance at the nomination.
ROFLMAO!
Fred took my $100 contribution on Sunday and resigned the campaign the next Day, Monday. Scoundrel, pure scoundrel.
He was a Presidential candidate whore
Don’t you just love it when Marxists pretend to try and save us from ourselves?
That's why I never give Politicians god-like status and are more skeptical of who they really are.
