The 20 Greatest Guitar Solos Of All Time (or "What I Did With My Wednesday Night")

Our Greatest Guitar Solo Of All Time poll certainly caused some fierce debate amongst guitarists… and that was just in our office. Choosing the 'greatest' guitar solo is obviously subjective in the extreme. But Guitarist had other motivations too – we were eager to see how many modern solos have impressed you all in the thirteen years since our last solo poll. The results were suprising. After asking for your nominations, we took the 20 most popular and asked for you vote on which your though was most deserving here and at MusicRadar. You voted in your thousands, fanbases were motivated and old favourites suffered.

That sounds about right. It took Eddie Van Halen to finally knock Steve Howe off his perch in the Guitar Player poll. :)

Interesting story about Wakeman: He was hired to play piano on T.Rex’s “Get It On”, but when he heard the song he told the producer that the song didn’t really need any piano. The producer suggested he just add a few glissandos here and there, to which Wakeman said, “But you could do that yourself?”

The producer responded with, “Do you want to pay your rent or not?”

The 60's and early 70's were an explosion of talent and expertise unequaled since.

IMO

It was great to have been there, and I don't give a shit WHAT the "modern conservative viewpoint" may be about my being an unwashed hippie .... I got THIS close to Janis and met the Doobies .. among others.

I got out of the Army in 67 and I THINK I remember being at a Cream concert in a basement of a church or a school and asking, "Why do you dress that way"

If so, I met Clapton and didn't know it ... Ginger Baker ...

Thasnkful for having survived and thankfully it will never be repeated.

They should have. His solo on “Cemetary Gates” kicks arse.

It’s part of the reason why he tuned his guitar to C# for much of Sabbath’s early career.

It’s too hard for me to choose ONE Maiden solo I like best (and while Dave is a fantastic player I’m a bit more partial to Adrian).

I’ll pinpoint for you the exact part of Dogs I’m referring to, one of those “How the heck did he do that?!?!?!” moments.

“I also wonder, if, anywhere on the planet, there’s a woman that is a King Crimson fan...”

My wife doesn’t mind In The Court of the Crimson King, but she leaves the room when I put on Larks’ Tongues In Aspic.

I saw Dokken at a club gig last summer. Jon Levin pretty much plays George’s solos verbatim.

And Don’s voice is SHOT.

I only care for Adrian Belew-era Crimson.

I don’t think the Eventide Harmonizer had come along at that point, so I’d wager that part is multi-tracked. I hear at least three parts in that, but the intervals are so bizarre I gave up on trying to replicate this part exactly. I can play the rest of this song pretty much note-for-note.

It did sound a bit “Brian Mayish”, but I never heard Gilmour ever do anything like that before or since, it seemed so out of character for him.

maybe she doesn't like the title of the song

“maybe she doesn’t like the title of the song”

No, I’m pretty sure she doesn’t like the actual song. She just doesn’t care for dissonance...

A little late to the thread but were you thinking of Hughie Thomasson (Originally of The Oulaws) Intro To Sweet Home Alabama?
