This is a different computer.
Once again I apologize for my frustration, but you simply didn't read or didn't understand my post.
WMP works just fine. It's the WMP plugin for Firefox that doesn't work. I can stream audio on IE but not on Firefox, my preferred browser.
::Butting head against wall::
YES!!! And it works just fine!
This is not about Silverlight!!! It's about the Windows Media Player Plugin for Firefox!!!
How many more times do I have to explain this???
There is not a lot of information here to go by but make sure you reboot each time you install or uninstall a program
I did.
Still doesn't work.
It sounds like your using an older OS with the latest programs and updates and that can get you into a bunch of trouble.
Troubleshooting is very difficult without the correct information about your computer, we're just taking shots in the dark.
Your advice sounds very good, vigilante, but not being a tecchie I'm afraid to try it (although when I first noticed this problem I hadn't yet upgraded to WMP 11 and had an older version). After all I've done I'm ready to just write it off. Everything else still works on Firefox and WMP embedded streaming audio works in IE. If I want to listen to something badly enough I'll just open that browser.
Thank you again.
I’ll give it one more try:
in your firefox browser, in the address bar type the following exactly and press Enter:
about:plugins
You will have a list of all the installed plugins and the .dll libraries they use and the file association types they are set to view.
Yours should be almost exactly the same as mine, Here is part of mine for the WMP plugin:
Microsoft® Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin
File: np-mswmp.dll
Version: 1.0.0.8
np-mswmp
MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled
application/x-ms-wmp np-mswmp * Yes
application/asx * Yes
video/x-ms-asf-plugin * Yes
application/x-mplayer2 * Yes
video/x-ms-asf asf,asx,* Yes
video/x-ms-wm wm,* Yes
audio/x-ms-wma wma,* Yes
audio/x-ms-wax wax,* Yes
video/x-ms-wmv wmv,* Yes
video/x-ms-wvx wvx,*
If for any reason you see a blank space or No in place of the Yes in the right columns, you have to associate the file type with the plugin.
If you have another video player installed, such as VLC with it’s own firefox plugin installed, it could be reassociating the file types to that program at start up/reboot using a small boot script.
regards,
The other option is to install the VLC plugin for Firefox to replace the plugin that is not functioning.
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
Installation directions:
Windows
Quit Firefox or Mozilla.
Select the Mozilla Plugin option when installing VLC Media Player. The installer will then automatically detect your browser and install the plugin.
Restart Firefox or Mozilla.
You then can in your Firefox address bar type in About:plugins
press enter, and you should scroll to bottom and see all the WMP stream file types be listed under the VLC plugin.
VLC plugin for Firefox is actually a better plugin but it came late to market so is not as often recommended, it is however still actively developed by a large open source developer base, the plugin you have been having problems with is in caretaker mode from a small software firm. It’s worth a shot.
I don't know how to associate files with programs. If all I had to do was type the name in then I could do it, but evidently that's now how it's done.
I just installed VLC media player, but it never gave me the option to install a Firefox plugin along with it and, unfortunately, the pages still don't work.
Thank you again.
