Word For The Day, Tuesday, April 12, 2011

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

quab

-n

An unfledged bird; hence, something immature or unfinished.

[Cf. D. kwab eelpout, Dan. quabbe, G. quabbe, quappe, LG. quabbe a fat lump of flesh, and L. capito a kind of fish with a large head, fr. caput the head, also E. squab.]

Yes, bird words two weeks in a row! Pure coincidence, I assure you.

It’s getting to be that time of year. Watch out when trimming the hedges! Last year my wife accidently knocked over a sparrow’s nest and a little quab was killed. My wife’s tender heart ached as the mommy bird cried out in distress. It was not fun.

A morning dove places her nest along the fence ledge outside my dining room window each year. She had two eggs a few months ago, one blew out and it appeared she had abandoned the second, then disappeared too. But a few days ago she was back, and hasn’t left - so there may be a quab beneath her again.

I have cardinals nesting in the Burford hollies next to the house and the burning bushes on the other side. I wish bluebirds would come back to the bluebird house but alas, the sparrows usually take it over.

Quab

1) A quab is a term used to describe the situation where you walk into your room and find you uncle and an octopus under your sheets.

Nephew: Oh my god uncle frank?
Uncle: Oh hello billy, why dont you go out and play some baseball, huh sport?
Nephew: bu but but but....
Uncle: *Pushes out of room* Now run along now.

I report. You decide.

If I were to say that Obama is a preening, strutting quab, I would be understating the effect his puerile actions have on our great Nation.

I once got into a taxi in NYC and had the driver welcome me to his quab.

Oh I would love to be able to watch cardinals! I like doves because they hang around and come back each year - sort of like a distant pet you don’t have to clean up after! lol

You can push the green things off to the side if you like. Emeril won’t be offended.

Our mourning doves have claimed our garage door opener for the past tree years. My heart nearly broke last August because we didn’t realize it, but one of the parents was left in the garage when we went away for a few days. it came staggering out when we arrived home and my dogs saw it and i screamed and xsgirls rushed to keep the dogs from it. it did eventually recuperate and walked down the driveway before finally flying away, but i literally was sobbing over the poor thing.

Bless your heart! I felt bad for the little sparrow too, and the mom, but mostly I ached for my wife and her sweet tender heart. The mom sparrow crying out distress calls was too much for my wife to take. We’re a small animal haven, and that was a sad day :-(

interesting, thought-provoking, and i tend to agree with this guy. my eldest quab is going to be coming home after graduation. She will be debt-free and has a great job, but in order to save any $ at all, she will live at home, given the ridiculously high cost of living here. will she be a better person for being intimately acquainted with Plato, Socrates and the Enlightenment thinkers ? she had an excellent classical education but at the end of the day it is about the J- O- B. With the economic crisis what it is, and appears destined to continue to be, i think educational conceits will have to give way to more practical considerations. My good friend's daughter is graduating from Harvard this spring and heading to Oxford for grad school. Now that is the ultimate in education conceit right there, but i imagine she will get a wonderful job eventually.

Matthew 10:29 “Aren’t two sparrows sold for only a penny? But not one of them falls to the ground without your Father knowing it.”
