Word For The Day, Tuesday, April 12, 2011
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
quab
-n
An unfledged bird; hence, something immature or unfinished.
[Cf. D. kwab eelpout, Dan. quabbe, G. quabbe, quappe, LG. quabbe a fat lump of flesh, and L. capito a kind of fish with a large head, fr. caput the head, also E. squab.]
i teared up reading your post, i would have reacted similarly. you feel so helpless bc you don’t know what to do to help them. i can’t leave the garage door open 24-7, so i have to hope the mom and dad can figure out what the deal is and take their shifts on the nest. When we are home i do leave it open so they can come and go as they need to. the spring is fine, but NoVA gets dang hot in the heat of summer and it disturbs me to see them in there at that point especially if i know we will be gone a day or two.
Well, it’s a rotten world sometimes. We try the best we can. My wife had no idea there was a nest. She was just trimming hedges, and then blammo, it was done and too late to undo it. The truth is that life is sometimes really mean and rotten like that. If nothing else, it makes you thankful for all the pain-free moments of peace and harmony you get. At least, that’s what I told my wife.
Houston Chronicle headline (above the fold) from 7 years ago, April 2004 ---
KERRY BLAMES BUSH FOR RISING GAS PRICES
April 2011 - Who is Ketchup Boy blaming today for rising gas prices? (....crickets chirping....)
True. If the bird were already dead in the garage i would have been sad, but would not have reacted viscerally. Seeing the bird in distress is what upset me, i guess. and a mom/baby situation is almost too much to bear. Is she making you cut the hedges this year?
MrsVRWC has a bag hanging on a hook on our back porch containing plastic grocery store bags that she uses for picking up the dog poop in the back yard. The other day she noticed that there was a bunch of debris including twigs and grass and pieces of cloth in the bag as she was reaching to get a plastic bag out, and then a bird flew out of the bag at her and then flew off. The crazy bird had started building a nest in her bag of bags. Fortunately, she had not started laying any eggs, so she will be able to find another place to nest.
they are such vagabonds, they will build anywhere. they have started nests in baseball caps and opened cartons of capri sun juice boxes in our garage!
for some reason they are not noticing the rise in gas prices this spring. just hasn’t occurred to them to pay attention i guess....
Well, they will, but it will still be Bush's fault.
Considering articles I’ve read where college grads are getting jobs running fast food joints, I can see where his line of thought is pretty close to accurate. Other than certain professions that require specific education, we are going to have a flood of degreed folks with minimum wage jobs.
i’ve seen it at 4.09/gal here. but i am still able to get it at Safeway for 3.79 bc i am an ELITE shopper. ; )
Still hovering around $3.69 to $3.85 here.
Eels again? Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, can’t we have steak or chicken? How about Boston Cream Pie? Please.
Quab? Thought that was Squab, oh well.
My uncle called them rain crows because the only time they sang was right before it rained. Did you know they mate for life?
Liberal leftie quabs
are all a twitter...
Donald Trump’s rising star
makes them all shiver.
They tweet and shout
in a writhing condition,
reminds me of when Sarah
was the current sensation.
Sarah got things started
causing much trepidation.
Now Trump’s in the picture
and he’s on a mission.
Paul Ryan’s on the budget,
John Boehner’s won a play,
Obama’s on defense giving
the Tea Party their day.
But the left is having
a collective shiver...
their hero Obama
has an empty quiver.
They squeak and squawk
attacking with venom,
they look like they all
are sucking on a lemon.
So we sit back and enjoy,
this macabre scene unfold,
looking forward to the day
when theOne is out in the cold.
I paid $3.92/gal yesterday.........I am NOT happy about that.
The reason we’re going into debt for our son’s college is precisely because of its excellent reputation in finding jobs for graduates. They have a fantastic internship program that paves the way for finding jobs so that makes it worthwhile. Otherwise, he’d be a number in a state school with no real networking connection.
Sounds like some people on here don’t have enough trees near where they live. ;-)
Back at the place I used to rent before I bought the house, there was an abandonned building on the property. There used to be a building supply business there. Anyway, one day we saw a bird building her nest on the ledge of one of windows on the building. Very close to the ground.
We figured that nest wouldn’t last long and we were right. Dumb birds build dumb nests. It’s Darwin.
