The 7.62X54 Russki round is ballistically very similar to the 30-06, so if you can hit it at 300 yards, you can kill it. In fact, like the 30-06, it’s very lethal well out past double that.
The canned ammo is ball and much of it with corrosive primers; you can also find hunting ammo in that caliber at gunshows, still very cheap.
