Big Bear Lake on the brink of spilling over

This winter season marks the first time since 1996 that the Big Bear Municipal Water District has released water from Big Bear Lake.

Dec. 22 was the first time this season officials opened the flood gates at the Big Bear Dam to let water out, officials said in a statement. Ever since then there have been three major water releases and some minor releases throughout March.

Currently there are some sections on the lake where water is lapping over the shoreline. Big Bear Lake’s water depth is at 72 feet 3 inches, which is just a mere 0.07 inches from maximum capacity. Also, snow pack from the mountain tops will continue to flow into the lake through the end of May, which will ensure the lake remains full to the brim.

“This season the lake has really kept me on my toes. I have to assess the water level daily to determine if we need to release more,” said BBMWD Lake Manager Mike Stephenson. “Our goal is to be full at the end of all this, and not flood the valley. It’s absolutely awesome having a full lake like this.”

Always enjoyed going up to Big Bear, though most of the years I lived there the lake level was always well below normal.

Yes, the drought seems to be over.

So Baldwin Lake is a lake again? Glad to see this. It was getting depressing.

This is a good time to be alive if you like to drink water.

“This season the lake has really kept me on my toes. I have to assess the water level daily to determine if we need to release more,” said BBMWD Lake Manager Mike Stephenson.”

So, is that not your job? “Hey, watch my cards for me, I gotta go eyeball the lake to see if there’s too much water in it.”

Well, that's just fine, but the consensus among environmental scientists is that full reservoirs are one of the chief causes of global warming.

(or is it high oil prices? It must be one or the other)

Not everyone knows where or what Big Bear Lake is

It would be nice for local/regional articles if the poster put where the locale / region is

Just a tip

I went skiing on Big Bear back in 1967. I had learned to ski behind a 14’ aluminum boat with a 25hp Johnson outboard. The boat at Big Bear had a 455 Olds inboard, complete with headers and velocity stacks.

Nearly yanked my arms out!

Yep. Perfect timing for the leftist to pull out their water resources scheme to regulate and tax it. Fresh water will be the new climate change issue because the global warming scam is not working.

I saw my first scare piece on one of the Discovery channels claiming we will run out of fresh water soon. It was eerily similar to the original global warming crap.

San Bernardino Mountains, SoCal. Around two hours from LA. All of the local mountains have white peaks.

My son, who lives in Sierra Madre (Near LA), invited me to Christmas one year. I go there and he suprises me by saying that we'll be spending Christmas in a cabin in Big Bear Lake. Well, it froze and snowed our first night there. I said thanks son. Could we please spent the next Christmas in LA where it's warm.

At my house, Christmas is usually 40 degrees and drizzling.

You may right. The media will flush the global warming into the memory hole — as if it never happened — and the lefties will never apolgize for the previous scam.

Heh, only 2 things I remember about Big Bear Lake...the big rock that showed how low the water level was...and that I could never catch anything(fishing)there...

Oh yeah, the other thing,....the hugh(FR spelling)snow flakes during the storms...something even a mid-westerner like myself could appreciate.

Like many areas in So. Cal., I wonder how much it's changed over the years, since I lived there anyway(80's).

In other words, I lived there during the tail-end of Reagan's California...last time I was there(2-3 years back)it looked more like Pancho Villa's(Pelosi's)California.

When I was at Camp Pendleton in 1968 I used to climb San Gorgonio on the weekends. When I returned from Okinawa in 1977, I spent a week at MCAS Santa Ana for a Maintenance Officer course. That was the last time I saw Big Bear & San Gorgonio. I imagine everything has changed by now... well, the peak of San Gorgonio probably looks the same.

California is awash. And the winter snowmelt hasn’t even started. In fact, here in Northern CA we had a new snowfall just 4-5 days ago.

Yeah but it doesn't matter how much snow or rain we get here...the lib eco freaks will still claim there is a drought and ration water...you just wait until summer and we will still get odd even watering days...sighing in Rancho Cucamonga
