I just paid $7.50 lb for Boar's Head American cheese at the deli the other day. What is the world coming to? Yikes!

The age old question: Do you butter the pan, or the bread. A debate as old and varied as the toilet paper up or down.
Personally, I am a convert to the pan buttering. It can get smokey if you are not careful, but you will get an even browning. Works especially well for those butter sticks right out of the fridge.

I butter the bread. But have tried (though it is somewhat more effort) spraying the bread with the spray margarine (I Can’t Believe its Not Butter was what we had) gave a very even browning result.

The age old question: Do you butter the pan, or the bread.I do both using real whipped butter and the sandwich comes out perfect!

I butter both the bread and the pan. Ditto.
Re the soup - to dip or not to dip. I don't, but some do.

Yum, my favorite is sharp cheddar slices, ripe sliced tomato, lots of freshly ground pepper on English muffin bread.
