Is San Francisco's Castro neighborhood appropriate for young kids?
SFGate: The Mommy Files ^ | 4/5/11 | Amy Graff

Last week, second-graders from San Francisco's private all-boys Town School strolled through the Castro, the city's world-renowned gay district where a huge rainbow flag flies gloriously above Harvey Milk Plaza.

The group of about four dozen boys, ages 7 and 8, was led by a reputable local historian who regularly leads walking tours of the Castro (and who asked to remain anonymous in this story).

The guide walked the boys by Pink Triangle Memorial Park, where 15 granite pylons rise above the ground in remembrance of the estimated 15,000 gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders who were persecuted, imprisoned and killed during and after the Nazi regime. A few other stops on the tour included the wildly colored Hope for the World Cure Mural, a pictorial depiction of the AIDS epidemic; the Human Rights Campaign Action Center, local headquarters for a civil rights organization promoting fairness for LGBT Americans; and Harvey Milk's camera shop, which the former gay activist and pioneering politician once lived above.

While the majority of the second-grade parents were in support of the field trip, the school is under fire by a handful of parents* who questioned whether the Castro is an appropriate destination for 8-year-old boys.

As a mom in San Jose, San Francisco is a very difficult place to visit with kids. There are wonderful places there, but you have to go through lots of awful places too.

My kids have not been through Castro, but we have driven past the strip joints on Broadway. I pretty much make jokes about it.

My kids like parts of SF, and can’t stand other parts. We always get our fill after a day up there.

Hey San Francisco, you stinking liberal hypocrites, when are you going to raise a memorial to the gays murdered by Islam?

My Bride and I got married in SF 38 years ago. Was a great city then. A place to visit and enjoy. I would not go back there on a bet today.

In fact, this question applies to ALL U.S. CITIES, where leftist politics dominate! If the left succeeds in eliminating the Electoral College, then it will be the U.S. cities that will determine who all future POTUS will be, forever!

Were any of the kids taken on the Castro tour without parental permission?

Taking kids into that city is nothing short of child abuse.

I’m sure daring to question this trip will, under Obama’s civility rules, get the person called names and claims they hate gays and are no different than Hitler.

Castro is totally inappropriate for kids.

Just as letting walk past sex shops would be.

Of the many times, I have been San Francisco I have never been to the Castro area, of course it was until three years ago I rode my first cable car.

Probably after the US Military goes over and puts a stop to it, just like it did to the Nazis.

San Fran was once the most beautiful city. The ridiculous nutcase lib idiots RUINED it. That’s why we all moved. Just think......Jack Dempsey trained there and was heart and sould of SO MANY who created businesses and life there. So very sad now.

It is certainly appropriate for young ‘gay’ kids.

I work in Hollywood and never would taker my nieces or my sister down to West Hollywood. It sucks that most people have to drive thru the homo stretch of Sta Monica just to get to the beach unless you turn to the freeway. ‘

I dunno, this IS SanFran afterall. Who’s to say that none of these boys has a gay parent? I can tell you that place is not appropriate for anyone in MY family, gay or straight, young or old.

A friend of mine grew up in the Castro district. She said that by the time she was 12, she still had no idea how men and women had sex, but she had witnessed a dozen ways that men and men did it.

It’s the same in other cities. There are parts of Dallas and Houston and Austin that are horrible.

The Exploratorium is wonderful. Fort Point is really fun to run and around and explore. We also love getting clam chowder in Fisherman’s Wharf.

We also loved seeing Wicked in the City.

My kids’ Christian School marches in the Chinese New Year’s Parade.

There are plenty of things to do that are appropriate.
