And I think two spaces are better than one, by far.
One spacing is laziness in the computer age. It removes a step for the automatic programs.
Yes, I am a two space man myself.
Sorry Matt, you’re wrong on this one.
Two spaces is a legacy of the mono-spaced typefaces of the typewriter and early computer age. It made sense when everything was Courier. With variable spacing the default condition for close to two decades now, one space after a period is what everyone should be using. The software takes care of appropriate spacing, and the extra space can throw it off.
As a somewhat related side note, it was the use of variable spaced typefaces in a letter dated 1972 that led FReeper buckhead to question the CBS letter about Bush’s Air National Guard service. Variable spacing from a practical perspective simply didn’t exist in typewriters of the era. One thing led to another, and Dan Rather resigned. Good riddance.
You know something Matt, one day I’ve got to complete my collection of autographed novels you published. I have the first, now I need the others. LOL.
Oh, and on topic, I agree, two is better than one.
Seriously, folks, this is going to be a blockbuster novel, if the excerpt on his website is any indication.
Single spacing is grammatically and stylistically correct my friend.
I will have to keep track of you Travis. I’m the author of Harry: Money Mob and Influence (click my name for some links). I’m a double spacer, but with a million words under my belt, that’s a million keystrokes potentially saved.
As a former technical writer and editor, I was trained to use just one space.
For printed pages in certain fonts, absolutely, you need to space it yourself using two spaces. For some fonts and almost always electronic copy, one space does the trick as the system adjusts the actual spacing appropriately.
(I’ve spent many years with the digital details of fonts, including the latest releases of navigation systems using iOS versus Android versus PC versus Mac, etc. *ugh* It’s an ugly world in there.)
I’m a typographer and have used font programs like Fontographer, AI and others in designing professional documents.
Two spaces were an adaption for monospaced typewritten fonts, which don’t exist anymore...all fonts are proportionally spaced now, hence, when building professional documents and layouts you should always use one space.
