DALEY, HUGH Lt. Col. (Ret.) USAF April 2, 1920 to March 10, 2011 Born in Glossop, Derbyshire, England, Hugh came to the U.S. in 1922 with his parents, Mary Alice (Burns) and James Daley and settled in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. After, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hugh enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Inducted at Fort Devens, MA, he applied for flight training and was accepted into the Pilot, Bombardier, and Celestial Navigation school. He was assigned to a Squadron in the first Wing formed of a new bomber, the B-29. After the training in Kansas, his final destination was Piardoba Airbase outside of Calcutta, India. From there, he engaged in reconnaissance and bombing missions over Rangoon and Singapore along with trips to the forward base in Chengtu, China. From Chengtu, missions were flown to Japan and the China base. Missions to the Japanese mainland were to Nagasaki, Hiroshima, and Tokyo. This was prior to the use of the Atomic bomb. After months of flying long missions out of China and with the loss of many airplanes, his Squadron was deployed to the island of Tinian in the Marianas chain. In his flying career many hazards were encountered along the way. .....
