Does anyone know when is the best time to throw grass seed down on the bare spots of the lawn?

Depends upon where you live.

In my local area (Zone 4/5) we advise people to STAY OFF THE LAWN until mid-April. No raking, no thatching, no NOTHING until that grass wakes up! All your’e doing is compacting your too-wet soil and making it hard for the grass to do it’s thing.

When it’s time, for patching, tear up the dead turf. Lay in 2” of top soil. Sprinkle on the seed, but do not go heavy! Grass seed will not germinate well if it’s ‘touching’ one another. About 12-15 seeds per square inch is PLENTY!

Cover with clean straw and keep watered for 15 days.

Grass. It’s a beautiful thing. :)
