You holding out on the roasted venison?

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2693141/posts

Seven deer — including six huddled in a circle — were found apparently killed by lightning in a southern Wisconsin farm field, neighbors and authorities said Tuesday. The deer were likely killed Sunday night, said neighbor Randy Lantz, 54. “It’s bizarre,” Lantz said.

...oh, wait! It says Wisconsin, not Virginia. Guess it wasn’t your bolt, after all. Maybe Diana?

Right now it seems that Old Man Winter is still flexing his muscles against Mother Nature... Or as they say the March lion is still roaring. My garden is so wet I can't even step foot into it. Even walking around the perimeter is like walking on a bog.

But I have been starting plants in anticipation that when the feud gets settled I can set foot in the garden proper.

Thank you Applegate Ranch. I overlooked them. I’ll order them shortly.

You’re not going to destroy your asparagus field, are you? I love asparagus. Bought some the other day, and ate about half of them before we got home. They were so good, even the white ones are good raw.

Oh no. I meant I may shovel the snow off the asparagus bed.

Wow! I missed that one. Thanks for the ping!

It sounds like WWIII on the back hill this week; spring Turkey Season is open and there are a gazillion turkeys back there.

My chickens have been nervously glancing in the direction of the gunfire today, LOL!

Yep. After a taste of spring last week, it’s cold, rainy, slushy and down to 17 tonight with some snow.

I’m still planting spinach today, though. I have a smaller garden that can be worked now for early spring salad greens. :)

Our townie friends had 60+ (I counted 53 in one photo) show up in their yard late last week. Fortunately, they can only eat what the small birds spill onto the ground from the feeders, or they would have been out of bird seed in the first 10 minutes. LOL

They have returned to their roosting trees on the ridge about our house. Gobble at just about anything that sounds remotely like a “Choughk!”...door closing, coughing, dropping a bale or sack on the ground. Fun to tease them.

LOL, that’s when I find notes and other stuff that were so important at that time. Then walk around wondering what was to be done, when, how much etc. Then finding whatever, hand to forhead because it wasn’t done.

I noticed though that those seeds are almost if not completely hybrid.

For me that’s a non-starter.

"I noticed though that those seeds are almost if not completely hybrid."

My locally owned feed & seed stocks what the local people like to plant, which seems to be a good selection of heirlooms, as well as hybrids that perform here. We have such hot weather, humidity, and insect pressure, that hybrid varieties developed for our region do much better in some vegetables. You can freeze hybrid seeds for years so, at this point in time, it is an acceptable choice.

Sorry I missed this ping!

No, I have not grown them myself but they are ‘The New, New Thing’ this season. Supposedly you get berries before strawberries, which are early producers. (June)

You need one variety or the other, and a ‘pollenizer’ (or whatever they’re calling it; too lazy to look) to get fruit.

It ranks up there with the other ‘interesting’ fruits that only the truly obsessed gardeners want to grow...like all the stuff from Russia, etc.

They taste like a cross between blueberry and raspberry to me. I’ve tasted them, but have not grown them myself.

Zone 2-8, so it grows and thrives just about anywhere. It originally came from Japan, then Canadians got hold of it and toughened it up, LOL!

Very interesting and I thank you! What is the deal with the Russian stuff? I would have imagined them to be pretty good stock if it was worth importing - no?

My plan is to plant them in unused areas (i.e.: borders and scrubland) in order to bring into production as much idle land as possible.

That’s a good plan! I think every square INCH of your property needs to be productive and useful. I hate grass, and I hate mowing it even more. I guess I could let my yard go back to Prairie...who’s going to complain? I don’t have any neighbors, LOL!

I think we offer that stuff because we can capture the ‘Far North’ customers in our state that have to grow in the crippling Zone 3...one step below ‘Tundra’, LOL!

I’ll ask the ‘Russian Mail Order Brides’ when they come into my shop in the coming weeks. They are always thrilled to death to find trees and shrubs they used to grow at ‘home’ for sale, here.

(You’d be surprised at how many we have in our area...guess the local Liberal men have to ORDER wives!)
