In a Short Paragraph: Radiation Levels Explained
yossigestetner.com ^ | 3/16/2011 | Yossi Gestetner

The radiation level of 1,000 MilliSieverts (MSV) at the power plant in Fukushima, Japan is hundred Rem. A person in America gets a year 620 Rem of radiation. The only diff is, that 1,000 MSV (100 Rem) per hour at Fukushima, is way higher than 620 Rem spread through the 8,760 hours a year.

of course, if a person reads that the radiation level at the plant is 400 MSV per hour (instead of 1000 MSV P/H that it once reached), the person indeed knows that it is a high level. However, with the above information at hand, one understands that the world is not coming to an end at this time… There are crews in protective gear working to contain the damage, and the nature – such as air and trees – disperse the radiation.

I think they mean 620mREM. 620 rem would easily kill you even if spread out over a year.

1OOO MSV is indeeed 100 Rem! In the USA, ppl get through the year, 6.2 MSV, which is 620 Rem. Read the math here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sievert#SI_multiples_and_conversions

No it is 620mRem. I am wrong that 620 would kill you spread out over a year, but you would almost certainly get cancer or have bone marrow damage. The upper limit dose is 5,000mrem or 5Rem per year.

Well, if you are convinced that it is the way you write, maybe update/correct that Wiki page. as far I read it, 1,000 MSV is 100 Rem, and people get a year 6.2 msv, which is 620 Rem.

1,000 MSV= 100REM

1msv=.1rem

annual dose 6.2msv=.62rem

.62rem=620mREM

Perhaps you ought not be the one to "explain" such a serious matter.

The dose that makes sense is the Banana equivalent Dose. Because of Potassium 40, eating a banana is about the same as being exposed to 3,000 some odd pico curies.

permitted exposure is very safe: One working level month in uranium mines is exposure to 100 pico curies, or like eating 1/30th of a banana. Normal eating of bananas is part of your background radiation. Max dose of anyone at 3 mile island was 1/75th of a banana.

How much is bad for you?

Annually
you get about 200-300 millirem or 0.2 to 0.3 rad, most from natural radon gas. Bananas and other Potassium 40 is about 20 millirems of that. 20 millirems is 0.020 rem

OSHA limit is 5 rem per year

Acute dose
Nausea at ~100 Rads or 110 Rem
LD 50 is at 450 to 500 Rads half the people who get this die
LD 100 is at 600 Rads all the people who get this die

I remember hearing that someone actually ate either uranium or plutonium to show that in a non pure or critical state it was perfectly harmless.

Now I have had in my 26 years well over 20 CT scans, 100 simple x-rays and dozens of dental panorex films, and I don't worry about it too much though that is probably 100s of times the dose you would get living near 3 mile Island.

620mrem would be way at the high end of annual “background” exposure. So much for wiki.

People in America do not get 620 REM. That is ridiculous. The average American gets approximately 300 mrem per year. A single dose of approximately 300-500 REM will kill about 50% of the people within 30 days. The legal limit for Occupational Radiation Workers in the US is 5 REM per year. That would be on top of the approximately 300 mrem a person receives from nature, medical etc...

Is it normal for one testicle to be larger than the other two?

The LD50 & LD100 figures assume NO medical intervention. These doses can be survived with effective medical treatment.

Doses at this level result in Acute Radiation Syndrome.

Level I ARS, also called the Hematopoietic Syndrome is predominate at doses of 300-600 REM (forgive me, I'm old school - that would be 3-6 Sv in newspeak) radiation kills off the stem cells involved in producing leukocytes (white blood cells). Major cause of death is due to the body's inability to fight infection. Can be countered by antibiotics, isolation in a germ free environment, blood transfusions and bone marrow transplant) Illness manifests approximately 3 weeks post exposure, with recovery (if successful in 6-12 months).

Stage II ARS, called the Gastrointestinal Syndrome, is predominate at doses between 800-3000 REM. Radiation kills the stem cells of the villi in the small intestine. Major onset occurs 10-14 days post exposure as the villi cannot repopulate and the small intestine ruptures. Death occurs from infection spread by intestinal contents invading the peritoneal cavity. This level is 100% fatal and no medical intervention is effective. Essentially, you are screwed!

Stage 3 ARS, called the CNS-CV Syndrome, is predominate at doses between 1000-3000 REM. Major disease onset is <24 hours post exposure. Radiation destroys the endothelial cells of the capillary system; after which the blood vessels start to leak. Death occurs 24-72 hours post exposure due to cerebral edema (CNS) or general cardiac system failure (CV). Syndrome is 100% lethal. You are totally screwed!

forget the differences between Rem and Sv...the presstitutes still can’t tell the difference betweem a mSv and a MSv...
