I need some info on good cigars. Not where to buy them per say but some specific brands and why they are good. As I have never bought cigars before I really have no idea what to look for. I want to at least get the bossman a gift I know he will enjoy... so please help. I know this is leaving itself open for snarky comments but I would appreciate it if the forum wise guys could restrain themselves.
Ping for your advice.
Find out what he likes then go to a cigar shop and buy something similar after talking to a knowlegable person at the cigar shop. There will be plenty to choose from in different price ranges. I’ve been enjoying AVO’s lately which are a little pricey.......$8-$10 per stick.
I prefer at least a 54 ring gauge or larger, and at least 6 inches long (6x54).
On the stronger side I like the Perdomo Maduro 6x60. On the more expensive side, I occasionally will splurge and fire up a Rocky Patel Decade, expensive but muy tasty, slightly milder than the Perdomo. I also really like the Saint Luis Rey Serie G for a milder smoke, good value.
Someone mentioned finding a cigar store with a good owner who will talk to you. Excellent advice, especially if you find a place where you can light up right there.
I suspect you will probably have a boating accident this weekend, loosing all your guns and ammo, after partying all night with friends and relatives, who ate all your food the night before.
Damn...I hate when that happens. Seems to happen alot on FR. Alot of unlucky people.
Cigar Aficionado ping list ping.
My brother also says to avoid “Ghurka” and “Acid” brands...
He says to add “Perdomo” to the good cigar list.
Humidor Pipe Shop 256-539-6431 is a friendly cigar shop that loves questions if you got them. (not related to us, but brother goes there to smoke and chat quite frequently). He says owner loves to answer questions.
Agreed. A. Fuentes are very nice, as well as Macanudos. Partagas too. Had many cubanos, did not see much more that warranted the cost. It’s a novelty, imho.
Dont agree that Cubans are the best anymore. Some Cuban companies took their seeds and whent to the DR, where I think the best are. Main question is what size and shape does the person smoke? Go into a good store and ask for the top of the line Dominican made. Or you could go to a little place in Union City where old Cuban guys roll them for you right there.
Thompson Cigars in Tampa....they have some very nice sampler packages of fine cigars and even some deals including a humidor. The dark Maduro wrappers make a very fine cigar.
Gurkha Warlords a bit hefty, but nice.
Don Elias - good daily smoke, relatively inexpensive
Excaliber, are also good
CAO criollos
Nat Shermans are really nice and smooth.
I order most of my cigars from CIGARS INTERNATIONAL. They have a great selection from el cheapo to medium price to off the charts. I usually buy mine from CI during one of their "daily deals". I recently ordered a daily deal of 5 Vegas torpedoes. 5 Vegas is a fairly affordable brand (that I believe is owned by CI). Other great brands have been mentioned that I like including La Gloria Cubana, Rocky Patel Sun Grown, Romeo y Julietta, Don Pepin Garcia, Punch, etc.
Don't get too hung up on Cuban cigars. A lot of great growers/cigar makers fled Cuba when the commies took over. They took their seeds with them and started new operations in countries with similar climates.

Of course, every cigar smoker has their own preferences (size, shape, tobacco type, etc.), but most will greatly appreciate the gift of a fine cigar - as well as the thought that went into choosing it. Over the years, I have had several employees give me cigars at Christmas (that's actually how I got my first Padron), and I have always appreciated the opportunity to try something new. I have kept some for a year or more looking forward to the "right time" to enjoy them. If he smokes often, don't get him the cigar he already smokes ... odds are he already has a humidor (or box) full of those.
I agree with the previous comments suggesting samplers. That's a great way to try a variety of cigars.
Ping!
“A woman is only a woman. But a good cigar is a smoke!” - Rudyard Kipling.
How did Paula Jones compare to Monica Lewinsky?
Close, but no cigar.
Rocky Patel Points are hard to beat and around $6 a stick. If you can find the Sumatras......but ‘em!
Thanks all for the input and advice. I think the “sampler” will be the way to go... just going to have to get the right ones now.
