Am asking some advise on the MOSSBERG ‘SECURITY’ 12-GA. 8-SHOT SHORT BARREL PUMP SHOTGUN. I bought a Stoeger P350 a while back and now know that there is a problem with double feeds. Consequently I have no confidence in the gun if I should need it in an emergency.

We've had one outing with it, and plan on another tomorrow or Wednesday. Simple, easy to work with. Ours came with the long 'bird hunting' barrel and the short 'home defense' barrel. The 20 G handles both 2 1/2" and 3" shells. We bought four boxes of skeet shot for practice and have some #4 load for home defense, being as I'm not big on painting and drywall repair ---- believe me, even such a lightish load in 20G will do the trick and save a whole lotta home repair and blood spatter removal.
Following this post, I'm going to pop up some 'tutorial' Youtubes I archived showing ease of loading, cleaning, etc.

As for the gun, if that's what you want, that's what I want for you.
The Mossberg is a fine weapon.
At $289 it is reasonably priced.
As others have said, it will do 3” shells.
3.5” shells are of very limited utility. The only “real” reason for 3.5’s was when we were forced to use steel shot on ducks and geese, and steel shot basically sucks at delivering consistent kills at longer ranges compared to lead.

If you really, really, really have to have 3.5” shells, you’d best go with a Mossberg 835:

BTW - if you’ve never fired a 3.5” 12ga loaded with lead shot... you might want to work your way up to it. I regularly shoot a .338 with 210 and 250gr pills... plenty of recoil that, and by comparison to the .338, a 3.5” shell out of a Mossberg 835 really makes me flinch. The 835 is a heavier gun than the 500 by a fair bit, too.
Other pump guns to consider are the Remington 870 and Ithica 37. IMO, the older Ithica 37’s were superior pump guns, slicker in action, lighter, faster-pointing.

The Remington 870 has one extractor. The Mossberg 500 has two.
The Remington 870 safety is located on the trigger guard while the Mossberg 500's is on the top of the receiver tang. Some people find that easier/more instinctive.
The Remington 870's slide release is found on the left side of the trigger guard, to the front. The Mossberg 500's slide release is to the rear of the trigger guard, to the right, which again, some people find more intuitive.
One of my on-line resources adds: "If you are using a Mossberg, flicking the safety off before (or while) arming the shotgun is done with the dominant thumb and the trigger finger can stay in the indexed position until you are ready to fire -- all it needs to do is to move to the trigger and press. However, if you are using a Remington 870, your trigger finger has to: (1) move to its position behind the trigger guard; (2) disengage the safety; (3) move forward to the trigger; and (4) press".
So, with the Mossberg, your trigger finger only has two steps instead of four. At stress time, that might be a consideration.
My own personal defense shotgun is a Winchester Defender, which is configured more like the Mossy, except that the slide release is on the left rear rather than the right. The action is smooth as silk, though, especially with the loving attention I have given it. Dependability, familiarity and mental preparation are more important than configuration, in my mind, regardless.
Simple, rugged, works first time, every time.
Safety on top tang is much better and more natural than one near trigger.

I've done some skeet shooting in the past, a little hunting too but this is for protection...for now.
