I’ve been extremely impressed! I saw people lined up to buy food yesterday in a line that was blocks long. Can you imagine that happening here? Folks in Detroit riot and loot when their team wins a game...
Japan doesn’t have the race baiters that we have in America. Of course they don’t have the minorities that we have either. The Japanese people are very disciplined and don’t scream and cry like the “entitlement society” we have here. I have the utmost respect and admiration for the Japanese people.

It was heart-wrenching to see these hard working people standing up for them selves and not whining and crapping all over the floor like the animals in the football stadium after Katrina
The also had a government warning system that worked in 15 minutes notice
ALSO unlike the retards during Katrina who saw it coming for days
I knew people who were in WWII (on the japanese side) and MANY of them are glad we dropped the bomb
Otherwise their leaders would have forced them all to fight to their death
The bomb STOPPED the War and saved hundreds of thousands of lives.
What we’re seeing in Japan is what I’d call
“the benefits of the ABSENCE of diversity”.

I suspect they dont have a festering underclass like we do, therfore no looting/riots etc.
I was watching CNN a couple of nights ago and what I noticed about the people in Japan is that they are very calm and cool on the surface but very emotional on the inside. They are stoic and patient from all I can see and they are resilient.
Even the TV version of New Orleans only showed the slum dwellers doing most of the looting, like most of the crime when there is no disaster. Check the crime stats.
The Japanese are the most bigoted nationalistic group of people on the face of the earth.
Chinese and Koreans are not far behind them.
As a round eye that's been to Asia, I couldn't believe the hatred these collective slant eyes have for each other.
We look at an Asian and see an Asian, they see an enemy of a thousand years.
The average American holds a grudge for about an hour, infinity wouldn't describe the amount of time needed to heal animosity in the Orient.
They have not really shown the people very often sushiman, only some who were shelters or distraught over a ruined home and life.
Will admit that when the US tv reporters are standing on a couple of acres worth of matchsticks that used to be homes to illustrate the scope, my second thought is “I bet they have that debris cleaned up in less than a month once the clean up begins”.
As a Marine, I went to Japan many times. Their society is so foreign to us, at least to the America of 2011. The individual is downplayed while the community and group is considered far more important. Because of that, my guess is that most Japanese are more concerned with getting their family/community help than themselves. They’re not the type to sit around and whine and cry. Plenty of people still around who had to rebuild Japan after WWII. To them, this is a far easier task than that was. They’ve known hardship and didn’t crumble.
There is no Civil Defense in the US, that was killed off a long time ago, no system of fallout shelters and only a the Early Warning System in the media and even then, what then?
If CA had 1 hr to prepare for a Tsunami, it wouldn’t matter because the freeways would be packed there would be no place to go, and no plan for what to do if they stayed in place.

My son was stationed in Japan for the past three years. (They recently returned to the States.) He and his family loved being there and really didn’t want to come home! They love and respect the Japanese people for all the reasons posted above. Seeing the Japanese response to this trifecta of tragedy for myself is heartbreaking and inspirational.
I do believe there are still rural areas in this country (like where I live now) where the response would be similar to Japan. However, based on what I’ve personally seen and experienced in the aftermath of Rodney King and Katrina, I know very well what would happen in Detroit, NOLA, Watts, etc. That is also heartbreaking.
Maybe but the radiation may not be.
BTW, I am in the process of teaching myself Japanese (on and off for many years, but more deliberately over the past couple of months) and would appreciate any guidance/recommendations/resources that anyone here could provide.

But everything I said is true and since you live in Japan, you know that the Asians hate each other.

I am surprised at some of the posts here that negatively compare our culture and behavior under stress with that of the Japanese.
Our country has a tradition of responding well to challenges. In the vast majority of cases the American people work together dealing with disasters such as tornadoes, floods, and even hurricanes. Before the flood waters are receding the American people in most disasters are out there looking for survivors and cleaning up. There is no reason for us to be ashamed of our reactions to disaster.
Let’s be clear - what happened in New Orleans, Detroit and Los Angeles is not a reflection of our American culture. It’s a reflection of an amoral thug culture that not only is being allow to flourish but is being fed by our government.Twenty years from now it may be the mainstream American culture but it’s not there yet.
