Pirates hijacked 53 ships and held a total of 1,181 hostages ...

These very unfortunate events and statistics are renewing and raising awareness about Somali piracy, and many piracy experts echo the advice of Amb. David H. Shinn, former U.S. ambassador to Ethiopia and Burkina Faso, who notes that “leisure travelers have no business going into the Western Indian Ocean until the crisis caused by Somali pirates has ended.”...

However, “some pirates come on board just to steal things,” says Capt. James K. Staples, a Master Mariner and U.S. Merchant Marine...

Given the fact that he is a desperate person to begin with, if he wants something that’s replaceable, let him take it...

If we had a guy in the White House that didn’t tolerate this crap, we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

"...Given the fact that he is a desperate person to begin with..."

Liberal BS indeed. My wife actually said to me "Their waters are overfished, they have no other livelihood..."

Damn. My own wife, I nearly fell on the floor, but I know where she got that from. I don't watch television, but I will bet dollars to doughnuts they spout that line.

That burns my ass.

Shoot early, shoot often, take no prisoners, don’t allow yourself to be taken prisoner - if we had a decent government, all of the pirate ports and ships would be smoking wreckage, but we don’t so it is up to you.

Their waters are overfished, they have no other livelihood...

I didn't know that. Well, that opens more options doesn't it.

If they aren't fishing then they won't mind if we destroy everything that floats along that coastline. An LHA, a couple frigates and some fast boats and we should be able to wrap up this problem in a couple weeks.

"They’re basically thieves, not holding people for ransom, but if you a catch a thief in the act, don’t resist him."

Same mentality that allowed THIS:

Resist. Resist like you are on Flight 93.

How about this: the ones you don’t kill outright, you bury up to their necks below the tide line while the tide is out. Relax with drinks, cigars and a beach barbeque while waiting for the tide to come in. Video the process. Widely distribute same in places like Somalia.

Rinse and repeat until piracy is practiced only in hell.

This makes me angry.

I say spend a day dropping leaflets telling people to get the hell out if they aren’t pirates, stop and board every boat that leaves to go to sea and inspect it, get four or five 12 plane formations of B-52’s, load them up with MK84 iron bombs to full capacity, set the drop to ripple and cruise down the Somali coast, tearing it up so badly they cannot take a kayak out.

When that formation is done, do a 180 and wave to the next group of incoming formations as they pass outbound.

Lather, rinse, repeat. It is not worth the life of one single US serviceman to set foot on shore.

Just out of curriosity, what’s the range for a yacht? I looked at a couple and if I’m reading it right, it’s only about 500 miles? How would you get to europe for a refill?

All of the US sailors I know are heavily armed. Aks, shotguns and pistols. They have multiple guns for all distances.

my guess is that you only know sailors in the US Navy or those civilians that sail on Government ships. Civilian sailors, Merchant Mariners, on civilian ships are not ALLOWED to have weapons on board US flagged vessels. I’ve sailed as a Merchant Mariner for 21 years. The only crews a that have weapons are those that sail on Government ships.

The best way to beat the pirates are to keep them off the ship. The ships’s speed and a high freeboard help the best.

The only way to stop this is to allow the Navy to blast them out of the water. Period. Destroy everything that floats and they will not have a way to get out to the shipping lanes.

I hate to have to correct a 21 year veteran of the Merchant Marine so I won't. Just sayin'.

Depends on how much food you can carry.
