Perhaps he is retiring? Generally you give notice of retirement well in advance, and may spend at least some time grooving in your replacement. At minimum, you give a couple weeks notice. Look at the phrasing:
Now he has tendered his resignation, effective immediately. The company simply says that "Joe Bastardi is no longer with AccuWeather. You won't see more forecasts posted by him."
It strongly hints of a very acrimonious parting.
