I still remember seeing the very first episode of “Miami Vice” when they played “in the Air Tonight.” *chills* That was the first time a television show had used actual popular musical artists rather than cheezy scores.
That sequence in the pilot for Miami Vice is what turned me on to that song.
Phil also guest starred in an episode of Miami Vice, (second season I think it was named ‘Phil the shill’ or something close to that). His roll was as a combination drug dealer and con man. His acting was not to bad at all either.
When they blew up the car, I almost cried. Found out many years later that they blew up the stunt car, not the one that was in most of series.
After they started to use the Testarossa to make Ferrari happy, the show was never the same.
‘Miami Vice’ was great for the ‘80s. I loved that show. The show made great use of the popular music of the day. One of the best episodes was the one with Ted Nugent as a really, really bad killer. The song used at the end of that episode was ‘Cry’ by Godley and Creme (10cc). Perfect.
Another good episode and song use was ‘Long Long Way to Go’ by Phil Collins.

Saw it too. Seminal moment in TV history when TV ceased being merely TV and became steadily more "filmlike". Remember who directed that pilot: Michael Mann, who has since directed the remarkable "Heat", among other films.
