My favorite street snack from when I lived in Puerto Rico was bacalao frito...fried salt cod. Vendors sold them from carts and they were very inexpensive. Harder to find them here but when I see them, I always buy some.

My Uncle used to go out into the Gulf of Mexico near Pensacola with several other guys and net fish. He would keep the mullet and give them the rest.

He was a terrible cook on most things but he had mullet down perfect. He would salt it and deep fry a whole bunch at a time. He would fry hush puppies in the same grease.

It was very very good. Mullet can be uncommonly good if fresh and cooked properly.
