AEE is 5.6%—not bad for a utility. Thanks for the tips. Are you Benny Lurkin?

Just a quick note for the 25% and up margin rate US Tax Payers - US Stocks pay “Qualified Dividends” that, thanks to the retention of the “Bush Tax Cuts”, are capped to the 15% maximum rate. The non-domestic companies listed here probably do not, so compute your “effective dividend rate” accordingly.

You don’t want too much sector concentration. If you reach for yield, you will have to much in utilities and telecomm.

I would recommend including oil majors, cigarettes, and consumer. You could look at companies like Altria, Sysco, Connoco-Phillips.

I would suggest a portfolio of about 20-25 stocks, with no more than 5 or 6 in any one sector.

If you want to sweeten your yield, look at financial preferreds from good names. You won’t get any capital gain, but you could have about 15% of your portfolio in them. Make sure they have 15% tax eligibility.

I spent almost my entire working life employed by these folks.

Genuine Parts Co. (GPC) is a distributor of automotive replacement parts in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. February 21st the company increased its quarterly dividend 10% to $0.45/share is payable April 1, 2011 to shareholders of record March 11, 2011. GPC has paid a cash dividend every year since going public in 1948, and 2011 marks the 55th consecutive year of increased dividends paid to shareholders. The yield based on the new payout is 3.4%.

Not a bad track record.
