MARCO ISLAND, Fla.- A Florida woman said her missing dog was found after a group of dolphins drew a neighbor's attention to the canine treading water.

Cindy Burnett of Marco Island said Turbo, an 11-year-old Doberman, escaped from her yard Sunday night and she and her sons were unable to locate him, WBBH-TV, Fort Myers, reported Thursday.

Burnett said a fatigued Turbo was finally spotted swimming in canal water when a group of dolphins splashing loudly drew a neighbor's attention to the distressed canine.

Burnett said Turbo, who was pulled from the water by the neighbor, could have been in the water for up to 15 hours. She credited the dolphins with helping to save his life.

"If he had to tread water all night long, I know he wouldn't have been able to," Burnett said.

Thank God it is post season and these dudes were not at practice. Other wise they would not have been out swimming around in the ocean and seen the wayward dog.

Was thinking the same thing.

The dolphins were probably the ones that kept the dog out in the canal for so long, trying to have fun while doing so. Then, when they finally got bored, they signaled for somebody to come get the dog out.

There are many documented stories from WW II of USN pilots, forced to ditch in the Pacific, being pushed in their rafts, by dolphins towards Japanese occupied islands. The pilots used their paddles to push the dolphins away. They prefered to wait for pickup by subs or PBYs, rather than face near-certain execution by Japanese captors.

You are very likely right.

Dobes are -notorious- for being bad swimmers and won’t swim unless they have to.
[Too narrow/keel-shaped and no buoyant body fat or fluffy fur.]
They can’t easily stay upright in the water like a Lab [or every other water dog] can.

Most people who take their Dobes swimming use special doggy flotation vests.
