In today's fractured music industry, Billboard's venerable Hot 100 singles chart seems a bit dated. And last week, when the magazine celebrated its 1,000th Hot #1 single (Lady Gaga's "Born this Way") there seemed to be little point in perusing through the comprehensive list of all the chart-topping songs since the 50's. Thanks to the internet, now we have a reason to scroll through all 1000 #1's. Why?
Well, we can listen to almost every one of them as a five second clip, arranged chronologically. Via a Sound Cloud user with a penchant for radio hits, sample how the music landscape has evolved over the decades.
Not sure why anyone would want to listen to only 5 seconds of any good song. But what is available on youtube of our old favorites being played in full keeps me busy during my lunch hour.
My favorite:
Walk Away Renee - The Left Banke

Cool.
“House of the Rising Sun” (Animals) is way way ahead of the modern rock era. In 1964 its a hard rock song in the middle of a lot of do-wap. Nothing even close comes until 1967.
The Beatles dominate that list with -count em- 20, followed by the Supremes with over 10 but I didn’t count theirs.
Wow! Thanks! a bit of personal archeology!
“Disco Duck” is the worst of the best. Yuck
That is VERY cool. Thanks!
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Going to and from Jr High and High SChool—at least HIgh School

the song
2525 played
along with
DOWNTOWN
Gads I hated those songs by the end of the first month!
Ahhhhhhhhh...it drives me crazy. I just get interested in one song and it already gone passed two other favorites of mine. Clearly a demented mind developed this.
BTW-Over Christmas we have a song on one of our variety Christmas albums (”I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”). My son and wife wondered who that was singing with the nasal voice. I was incess and said that is the great Patsy Cline. They asked, “Who’s Patsy Cline?” Sheeze........Next they’ll be asking who Gene Autry is.
Who’s Gene Autry < ducking for cover>
El Paso — Marty Robbins.
I remember both of those.
NOW LOOK!
I went with Roy Rogers but still liked Gene, too.
He also happened to be a very sharp Real Estate investor.
Very cool indeed.
This will give me something to do while waiting for my flight on Friday.

LOL.
Especially on songs like “Running Scared” by Roy Orbison (although even that comes in second to one of the top 10 greatest songs ever sung — Orbison’s “Crying” by Don Mclean. Those last few notes are heartbreaking perfection.

What? Free Republic isn’t enough? 8~)
Don’t tell anyone, OK? ;-)
In his later years, Gene Autry was the owner of the Cal Angels MLB team.
I was also a RR fan but also like Dale and Gabby Hayes, too! Now those were such innocent daze....
INDEED.
I was in a house church ran by a Methodist Charismatic MD and his wife in La Mesa CA . . . the wife was the spitten image of Dale Evans Rogers in height, looks and personality. Incredible.
I understand the RR museum has been on hard times and Dusty? moved it to OKlahoma? ?
