Once Upon A Time In The West [C'era Una Volta Il West] Is More Than A Cult Classic

Once Upon A Time In The West is a rare film. The movie is over 40 years old, was snubbed by critics (including Roger Ebert) and shunned by audiences on its release, but Sergio Leone's follow-up (but not sequel to) The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is now a staple of even commonplace stores in the Louisville area, like Wal-mart or Target. On IMDB.com's list of the 250 highest user-rated films, it places #20. And that's not just with the general public. Film critics now often cite this as one of the best motion pictures of all time. What could account for such a remarkable turn-around?

How can anyone put any stock in Roger Ebert’s opinion about anything? After all, he recommended that we vote for algore.

For those interested, Sergio Leone, Something To Do With Death (2000) by Sir Christopher Frayling is an excellent biography.

Sergio Leone wanted Jason Robbards in “Duck You Sucker” but got James Coburn instead.

When Ron Howard, a liberal Hollywood director, released the film “Wilow”, it was panned by Siskel and Ebert. Upon finding out about this, the novelization of the movie had a name for the two-headed, fire-breathing monster near the last third of the movie. It was called and Ebersisk!

That would be Jill's theme song, some consider it the main theme song. There were others, Harmonica's, Cheyenne's, etc., that would often play when the character would enter a scene.

1969 was a highlight year for Gabriele Ferzetti. Morton in “Once Up on a Time” and as James Bond’s father-in-law (for about 1 minute) in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.

You know, I finally got around to seeing Once Upon... just last fall. I won’t say I liked it better than Good, Bad, and The Ugly, but it was a great film nonetheless. Quite a kick seeing Henry Fonda in such a villainous part.
BTW, another western that got a lot of criticism (though admittedly also a lot of praise) when it came out that I just love is “The Wild Bunch”. Bill Holden, Ernie Borgnine, and Robert Ryan all in the same film? Fuggadaboutit!
