You’re right Manc. It is politics and money. They spend HUGE bucks promoting, advertising and showing their dogs all year to get into shows like Westminster. They often do not choose even close to the best dog. Some is due to ignorance of the judges. Maybe they haven’t judged that breed very much. I check past shows that they have judged, see if they have judged my breed a lot and who they chose on those shows.
We send ours off to a handler to show. Cheaper, faster and easier than traveling all over.

Too sweet!
Oh, I’m still hooked on Dobies, I just couldn’t get past the death of my last guy and I knew that no other Dobie was ever going to measure up to him.
Perhaps I will get another someday......

Exactly. It’s a shame what they are doing to some of the breeds.

I showed dogs for many years. I think you could finish any good dog but if you want to go further you really need attitude. The best dogs with attitude just would take my breath away. You could see it when they were trotting around in an open field. They just had IT, naturally.

Beautiful Corgis. They are such a friendly, wonderful breed. My dogs have that toy but they completely ignore it. No snow ever here, so no chance of filling it with snow.

Your Corgi is a cutie pie! We have snow this morning, too, bu my Boston Terrier took one look at his first snow, and apparently wanted none of it!

What a great picture. We used to have a red Dobie. We finished her, bred her once and then retired her and had her spayed.

People who say that dont understand beauty. The reason the dog is beautiful is because the dog is bio-mechanically exceptional. In this case, the dog has both outstanding basic structure and outstanding breed characteristics. Form always follows function, thats why the dog is shaped like it is.<
BINGO!!! Spoken like someone who actually understands dog or other animal judging. Too bad so many of the judges ignore this basic tenant of what makes the ultimate dog in a given show. So many sellout judges reward the dog on who its owner(s) are, who handles it and on how much money is spent on advertising the animal in dog show oriented magazines.
I cannot tell you guys what a pleasure it was to see a truly impartial gentleman who actually knows dogs officiate at The Garden for once.

Conformation has it’s purpose. It keeps the breeds from straying from the breed standards.... or at least it’s supposed to. Some of the breeds have been allowed to be changed way too much and then they just change the breed standard. I am against that. I think they are getting a little stricter now, I hope it continues.
Also, the toy class is for the most part a companion, lap dog. Conformation is really the only way to judge them. We don’t want dog shows to turn into shows where a dog is judged on it’s tricks.

><------Not functional.<
Not American, for that matter. That's a German style show and that is a faulty dog. THIS is the correct German conformation:

She is a beauty and already a big winner with 16 bests. No doubt that number will take off.
I think Westminster has done a better job of picking judges in recent years. They may still have club members getting assignments but at least they seem competent (unlike the bad old days).

I always thought Australian Shepherds should have been renamed American Shepherds! Their standard is pretty general on colors/coat etc but its very specific for herding dog conformation. They definitely belong in the herding group. Id have one by now if they had a tail... Naw, tailless dogs are sexy! Those little nubs wiggle 3x faster than the tail models and don't knock things over. In fact, the whole butt wiggles, even without a tail. The Aussies were refined in the American West, but some people think the line originated in the Basque region next to Spain. I have read everything I can on the subject and concluded that no one really knows for sure. Regarding coat conformity, if you want conformity, get a black Lab. Every Aussie is as unique as a snowflake. If you want brains, get an Aussie. They aren't meant for everyone, but they and herding dogs in general suit me fine.

Yep! My Aussie shepherd “Blue” used to wiggle his entire body. When he got excited to be going somewhere he would do 4 foot vertical leaps!
I learned a lot about how to deal with women from that dog. He figured that as long as they were sweet talking him he was going to keep going until he was in their lap licking their ear lobes!
SMART DOG!
