For '52 the Chevrolet Deluxe Station Wagon factory price was the highest of all the 1952 Chevy's at $2281.00. In spite of the high cost, 12,756 units were sold. On the other hand the same 4 door 8 passenger 1952 Ford Station Wagons sold only 11,927 units and the cost was $200.00 less. On the other hand Chrysler's 1952 Town and Country Windsor Station Wagon only sold 728 units at a much higher cost of $3,200.00. While the 1952 Chrysler Saratoga Town and Country cost even more at $3,925.00 and a production figure of 481 units.

the station wagon hasn't gone any where. It's now called a “cross over”.

Mine is close to the Griswold’s: A 1970 Buick Estate wagon, green with wood-grain siding. It’s not going anywhere (into oblivion.)

Years ago I was visiting a small group start up for a new church. We were participating in the ice-breaker of the week and that was to go around and tell the folks the type of car the family had when we were in 7th grade.
For me that was easy, it was a 1957 Ford Ranch Wagon. But the question was a little harder for a little lady that came to us from Cambodia.
Finally, she spoke up, "We didn't have a car, we had a Water Buffalo!

My dad had a Cadillac station wagon when I was a kid. It turned some heads... He sold it to a guy who totaled it the next week....

While not technically a station wagon, these old Ford panels were great for doing all kinds of nefarious things in the back, even at school or in the mall parking lot.

For a family of 3 with a big dog, Volvo wagons are too small for us (on trips and when my parents are in town). So are their SUVs. I’m getting a Yukon XL next month and just hope it fits in the garage.

The market is drying up.
Depends on the year and the wagon.

You all remember the rear facing rear seat in the late 60’s and early 70’s station wagons?
Given today’s safety standards, that would never fly today.
Another strange, go back and look at the 4 door cars from the 30’s. Today’s SUV’s like the Tahoe and Expedition are basically the same configuration, just with modern engines and safety gear. Both are high riding high capacity vehicles. Back in the 30’s most roads were unpaved and they needed the high ground clearance. Now most roads are potholed and we need the high ground clearance.

Thank the EPA.
I recall an article with the reason that SUVs supplanted the station wagon: for CAFE fuel economy standards, station wagons were counted as cars, and messed with manufacturers fuel economy averages. SUVs counted as trucks.

It's really about price.
Subaru is going great guns on their wagons, for example -- at about 1/3 of the price of a Volvo.
