Yes, Richard Schweiker. It cost Reagan the support of Jesse Helms and, thus, any chance of taking the nomination at the convention.
And I'll say that it certainly isn't impossible that the eventually VP nominee could be the Presidential candidate who comes in second. It's just hard in the modern age to pick a running mate and extol that person's virtues and qualifications as a Vice President and potential President when you've just finished spending a year savaging that same person in the media.
Besides, with the deep pool of potential VP candidates out there, there doesn't seem to be much reason to pick a losing primary candidate.

It is because of posters like you that I love this place. It’s like Mr Robinson invites a bunch of of people over his place for a big party every day, many of them very knowledable like you! Thank you for that info about Jesse Helms. I never understood that move by Reagan, I was a 22 yr old liberal and it caught my eye when he did it. Showed me he could think outside the box, if he did it today I’d scream bloody murder.
