RBS (LON:RBS) have today advised that they remain buyers of ARM Holdings Plc (LON:ARM) in light of recent developments at HP.
Last night, HP announced it would use the Palm/WebOS in its PCs later this year. According to RBS this could help ARM penetrate the PC market as the WebOS is based on ARM CPUs.
Didier Scemama at RBS says:
"We believe this announcement is potentially significant for ARM as HP, the leading PC vendor, intends to use a different OS than MSFTs Windows, in its PCs.
"Currently all HPs PCs are based on x86 processors from INTC or AMD.
"While it is unclear which architecture (x86 or ARM) these webOS PCs will use, we believe.
"ARM would be a logical choice since all existing WebOS smartphones and tablets run on ARM CPUs.
"HP commented that its strategy going forward would be to link all devices (PCs, smartphones, tablets, printers, ...) so that they can communicate seamlessly. They see WebOS as the way to achieve this vision.
"We also note that the HP slide that supported the WebOS-based PC announcement showed not only a notebook PC but also a desktop PC, suggesting that HP has got big ambitions for WebOS."
RBS have a target price of 625p on ARM Holdings Plc.
What’s with these guys? As soon as iPads started displacing MacBooks and netbooks for some people, ARM began penetrating the PC market.

When the world’s largest computer maker announced that it plans to equip laptops and desktops with its own operating system, you can be sure that the squeals emanating from Redmond’s corner offices were not squeals of delight. And we’re guessing the denizens of Cupertino’s executive suites pricked up their ears as well.
On Wednesday morning, at a press event unveiling its new webOS-based TouchPad and a pair of webOS phones, HP said that it would bring its Palm-acquired operating system “to the HP devices with the broadest reach,” meaning PCs. And Just to make sure that no one missed the implications of that blockbuster, Todd Bradley, executive vice president of HP’s personal systems group, stood in front of a slide that included images of laptop and desktop PCs with “HP webOS” emblazoned on their displays.
Bradley provided no details about HP’s webOS-on-computers plans, such as what levels of devices are planned, but he did say that webOS PCs would appear “later this year.”

Getting interesting.
Yes. It is getting interesting. So many end user products that could be perhaps equally served by so many divergent Integrated Circuit Design markets for the most part. Who has the best solutions. On weather topic. Will go down to approx. 15 degrees F tonight in my neck of the woods. Sort of cold, but no where near what the folks westerly are experiencing.
Seemed to be a low spot where air directly from Siberia found a home.
North of there in Kansas it was cold but nothing like that.
Getting a late start. Yes I saw the minus thirty degree readings in OK.. Hopefully things will warm up for all of us.
