Vanity:Have you talked to any Americans thinking of going back to Europe?

Recently two people I know are checking to see if they can go back because grandma or grandpa was born in the old country.

Has anyone encountered this? One couple I know of are fairly conservative. They are following things closely with the possibility of the US going broke and losing reserve currency status which will be devastating. The husband's grandmother was born in Europe. They are making a back up plan and may move.

Today, I was talking to someone who is fairly moderate. I do not talk politics with them. Out of the blue they said one grandparent was born in Europe and they are working on getting passports because the country allows for it. They are making preparations to escape if things get really bad in America. They said things are falling apart and hyperinflation may hit in early 2012.

This is the weirdest thing. Do any European countries allow return if a great grandparent came from there?

It would depend on the country, I would think. However, if the US goes to hell, what would the rest of western nations look like?

Leaving the US for Europe would be the very definition of jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

The irony - most european countries make it extremely difficult to impossible to “go back”...

And you really have to earn it. Know the language, pay big $, etc. And you will never, ever fit in.

The world is not like America.

The collapse of the U.S. Economy would be a big enough splash to take out a good portion of global trade, that would negatively effect a good number of western countries in the least.

I don’t think they can escape the repercussions so easily.

Impressive how committed they are to their country and their fellow Americans.

When “fellow Americans” vote for a Muslim and even people here on FR love Bill O’Reilly who attacks Geert Wilders & loves Obama; I find it hard to blame them.

If things get as bad as some people are expecting, it will be every person for themselves.

Their fellow Americans voted in this administration and those who wrote, sponsored and voted for some disastrous legislation.

It is weird because they are not the first people who have brought it up out of the blue. I had a meeting with a pleasant older chap who was a professional. At the end of the meeting he asked me point blank if I thought the USA was going to go broke and fail soon. I was somewhat stunned.

Sad but true. Most people are walking around in a haze and have no clue what is going on. Reality is eventually going to catch up to them.

When the SHTF in the global economy, I would rather be here with our conservatives - American-Americans - than I would want to be with Europeans. I would rather be armed with Mexican immigrants who are much more like us than disarmed with Muslim immigrants who are nothing like Europeans.

Conservatives, if nothing else, will figure out how to create a decent community for themselves within a nation destroyed by Obama. Europe has no American-Americans to survive and thrive with.

If it gets so bad that Americans feel they have to flee, lets meet up in Texas - not Europe.

There would be areas here that would survive as free areas. Overseas, even with ancestors, you would probably be treated as a foreigner.

My Mother’s family came from the Hebrides or Western Islands. I would sort of like to live there but would never leave my Grandchildren.

There are a couple of good things about the islands tho. They are one of the few areas of Great Britain which are still fairly religious and are also known to be more conservative than the mainland. From what I have seen on the internet and National Geographic, they really are beautiful.

My parents already moved, but not to the UK or Germany (Where they are from) but to Israel (Where they met and lived for a few years)

While it was sorta for Economic reasons it was mostly that they missed living there and all us kids were grown, so they thought why not?

I would consider the former eastern-bloc countries, like Poland, Czech Republic, or Slovakia, because the people there understand what tyranny is, and don’t take their freedoms for granted, also they somewhat try to retain something of their culture without kowtowing to the Muzzies, like in the rest of Europe.

Yes, I have heard several people mention the possibility of a move to Europe. Many of these did the summer there in their youth or parents were deployed there when growing up.
I think many missed the opportunity to appreciate the experience at the time.
Some of the younger ones that made or inherited money early have mentioned they're expectation of a big housing pullback/crash when xenophobia rears it's ugly head and euro’s return to country of origin, some Brits are already taking their profits and moving on.I think if you spoke the language and lived outside the big cities you would probably be alright. And of course if you create some jobs or have a special skill almost everybody loves you (Even the French might tolerate you)

More than 1 million Americans now live in Mexico - better climate, lower cost of living.

Ecuador, Guatemala, and a host of other countries are filled with ex-pats.

You do not have to be a citizen to live full-time in many other countries. International Living magazine had its annual rankings of other countries in January of February.
http://internationalliving.com/2010/02/quality-of-life-2010/

It is an interesting read.

Getting citizenship is another story. It is possible to do so in places like Italy, as long as your grandparents never actually renounced their Italian citizenship. For those who qualify (rules are a bit more than I’ve stated), you would not give up your US citizenship, you would add Italian citizenship. Some follow through with this in order to participate in the benefits of the EU. Others for nostalgic reasons, or whatever. In my own case, one set of my grandparents came from Italy, but my grandfather served in the Army here to get citizenship. The Oath renounces citizenship in any other country.

More than you asked...

Here is the complete ranking of countries with links to how it is calculated. Opinions will, of course, vary...
