Gov't Research Also Shows Them Much Higher in Vitamin D; Dietitian: Credit Healthier Animal Feed, in Part

(CBS) If you like eggs, this is good news: A new government study finds they're actually 14 percent lower in cholesterol and 64 percent higher in vitamin D than previously thought.

Registered Dietitian Cynthia Sass stopped by the "The Early Show" Tuesday to explain what this may mean for your health.

What caused this change in cholesterol and vitamin D levels?

Sass, the author of "Cinch!: Conquer Cravings, Drop Pounds, and Lose Inches," told "Early Show" co-anchor Chris Wragge the saying "You are what you eat" applies to chickens too: Healthier feed results in healthier eggs.

When it warms up I’m going to build some easy-to-clean pens, and raise enough layers to provide our egg requirements. It’s way up on my to do list.

Cholesterol is a necessary part of cell reproduction. A good way to use your cholesterol is to consistently follow an exercise regimen built around weight lifting. I’m 51 and while I’m never going to be Charles Atlas (and never was) I keep my weight within 5 pounds of what I weighed when I was 21. Diet, rest and exercise. And I love to eat a giant omlette on Saturdays.

Because cholesterol is necessary in muscle maintenance, I think Lipitor and Crestor are actually unhealthy for muscle tone. I’ve had friends who discontinued those drugs because they could tell their muscle tone was shot.

This study makes me question the accuracy of all the other “official” stats on food.

Screw Government research. These same ninnies gave us the food pyramid in the 60’s with “11 grains” a day! The egg is THE most perfect food! Not the banana. It’s not the cholesterol count you worry about, it’s the carbohydrates. Eggs have NO carbs. Eat 50 for breakfast. Just don’t have toast, jam or pancakes etc with them.

Screw the “food pyramid.” I use the “food dodecahedron.” Much more variety, you know.

“Atkins was right.”

I believe so. With the exception of Scotch, I pretty much live off of meat (beef, chicken, turkey), eggs, whole milk, and vegitables.

I’m 240lbs at about 7% body fat (as in I’m 40+ and you can see all 8 abs).

Where Atkins went crazy was steady state cardio.

It’s OK, but I lift heavy weights, hard and fast, and do sprints, run stairs, push or drag a prowler, things like that.

Basically, the same stuff I did when a football player.

Look better with my shirt off than 99% of 20 somethings.

I decided a long time ago to go back to butter, bacon grease and lard. I never stopped eating my eggs.

We have a guy who works for us, he is 76 and can work a 12 hour day. He’s an old Mexican and I have taken him shopping for his weekly groceries ofte, he buys 2 dozen eggs a week and that is just for a 5 day week because he goes home on the weekends.

“, I think Lipitor and Crestor are actually unhealthy for muscle tone”

Cholesterol is needed for your body to produce testosterone, so, you’re correct.

“The incredible edible egg.”

####

Indeed. Just another of God’s many miracles.

Shirley Temple: “My chicken can lay an egg!”

Pinch-faced, frowning old biddy (undoubtedly a Democrat): “And what’s so special about that?”

Shirley Temple: “Oh! Can you lay an egg?”

Seventies flashback ping!!!

“Hear, oh prince, of an time when giants walked the Earth... When mighty sorcerers ruled. When the bejeweled thrones of the West were under threat of being crushed under the sandaled tread of Eastern barbarian conquerors...

Thus was borne out of a time of storm and darkness, not to mention irresolution and questioning—when all values and principles were held to scorn—that the word “cholesterol” was invoked, and both the high and the mighty (as well as the low-born and hapless) trembled at its sound...”

My guess is he does LOTS of walking.

My grandfather walked about 4 miles a day to and from work, ate anything he wanted and lived to be 98.

I LOVE eggs.

I think brown eggs taste better!

I can get farm eggs from time to time, but I’ve been getting the Omega-3 eggs you see in the store. They’re 20 cents more or so and far superior in my opinion.

REAL butter and honey are also good for you. Everything in moderation. Sure am glad I’ve been ignoring these idiots for decades now, ever since the 70s when Erlich said that we’re all going to die of overpopulation and new ice age.

Very little TV and NO MSM for many years. FR is the true gift that keeps on giving for news and events—and humor. We need humor...

“... been robbed of the terror it once invoked in us peasants?”

My older brother did not eat ONE egg for ten years. No fluffy scrambled eggs, no deviled eggs, no egg sandwiches... his cholesterol didn’t budge a bit. He gave up his neurosis finally and enjoys them every weekend. Can you imagine going TEN years without an egg?!! Blasphemy!!
